We did it! Really my wife did it. She reset all the firewall rules for internet enabled programs. I had tried to reset the rules for outlook express but this did not work. Resetting all the rules for ALL programs worked. Then a reboot and...Successssss! Thanks for your help I appreciate sites like this when 2 brains are better than one. I hope this may help someone else who is 'vapor locked' as we were. We are learning. Thanks again and have a Grand Summer.

Josh1; Tried that, no dice. We'll keep looking. Any other ideas? Works like a charm (mail) with Norton off but I don't want to rely on Windows Firewall. Have a Great Weekend. Thanks!

You maybe have two firewalls installed the Internet Connection Firewall that comes with Windows, (but it is off by default because you do not have SP2) and Norton firewall, this sometimes can cause problems. You need to disable one, I suggest disable Windows Firewall and keep Norton, if that does not work, disable Norton, and keep that one that comes with Windows. For more information on Internet Connection Firewall go here: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windowsserver2003/library/ServerHelp/28d7c0c4-539e-4510-9431-9e52d24e0a02.mspx
Try that and see if that works.

From Norton on line, no disc. We added it after we bought the computer.It's Internet Security 2005. We had no problems with the first Norton, which I think was a 2002?
Here is what comes up;
A time-out occurred while communicating with the server. Account: 'me.net', Server: 'promail.ptd.net', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC19
Norton is vague, and suggests that it's a server problem, it is not. I attempted to get into the logs of Norton and it froze my computer up twice. We do not have the Microsoft SP2 installed, just SP1. They were another problem, so we reformatted. Maybe that's the problem? Or Norton has a problem? We had this happen before with live update, and it was rectified in a day by another live update. This is day 2 and Norton no longer has email support and charges an arm and a leg for phone support. How nice of them. In any case, I have to get my rest now for the night, I'll check back tomorrow.Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Hello; We just ran Norton live update and now our Outlook Express doesn't work unless we disable the firewall. We tried several fixes (did not work) and we know it is not server related. We have Windows XP home and would appreciate any sugestions. We cannot reinstall Norton, we downloaded the program.Help! Thanks in advance.
