Thanks! I've taken your advice and been running a CD-RW at 4x speed, which seems the maximum that is safe for USB 1.1, and as you said that works fine. I guess that my machine is a little too old to have USB 2 already installed, so the card seems the best bet if I need more speed.
So thanks for all your help!
Cheers

Or buy an add-on USB 2 card.

Then I don’t think you have USB 2.0, USB 2.0 came around two years ago. But it will still work just not at USB 2.0 speeds.

The laptop was purchased in July 2001 - here in London, if that makes any difference! Was USB 2 around then?

To make sure, how old is this computer? Lets say you use a USB 2.0 hardware device in a computer that does not have USB 2.0. What would happen is that the device would work but you would not be able to obtain USB 2.0 transfer speeds, you would do the original USB speed.

Hi

Many thanks for your reply! There are two entries: 'USB Root Hub', and 'VIA Tech 3038 PCI to USB Universal Host Controller'. Does this mean I only have USB 1.1 - or even just the basic original USB? And if so, would the floppy USB 2 driver for Windows 98 also work for Windows ME?

Once again, thanks in advance!

No, you can place that disk in the drive, it will not mess anything up. To find out if you have USB High Speed or version 2, right click the my computer icon then go to properties then go to device manager, then go down to the bottom where you see USB controllers click the plus do you see USB high speed listed?

A very basic question! I have a Sony PCG-FX201 laptop with Windows ME. I need to know (to set external CD write speeds) which version of USB I have, and none of the listings or descriptions mention this explicitly. I have been told that Windows ME is 'compatible' with USB2, but take that to mean that it doesn't actually fall over when faced with a USB2 device: which seems different from having fully functional USB2.

I have been give a floppy that says 'USB2 driver for Windows 98'. Would it do any harm to stick this in my floppy drive to see what happens?

Thanks in anticipation!
