That it always not true, Windows 2000, and XP does have a bigger list of drivers more then 95, 98 or Me, but that does not mean it will have every driver for every piece of hardware. Windows 98 Se is better then Me, but the thing it does not have is system restore, I believe that system restore was used in Me because Microsoft knew you would have to use it about every other week ( I doubt that is true) I will most likely put this question in the Windows 98 section, when I do, I will let you know.

Okay great, now that we are able to get online, go to start-and you should see an icon that says Windows update (at the top), click it. What will happen is Microsoft update software will scan your PC, and it will download any security updates, and it may as well download your video drivers and software drivers as well. If you do not have a Windows update icon, then go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com let us know what happens.

I got it online yesterday. I tried to download aida 32. It didn't let me download it. It looked as if it would and at the last second it said something like service not installed or something. It surfed the web well. Just no colors or sound.

When you put Aida 32 on the PC you need to extract it, I do not know if it is a zip file or executable, on this PC, it is a self-extracting. So you must click the file and then follow the instructions, if it is a Zip file then you might need an unzipper program. Well something works for you to have sound coming through your cd player, because that means the Audio In cable that is plugged onto the back of your cd player, and then the other end of that cable is plugged into either the motherboard for onboard sound or a card. So try this, go to start-settings-control panel-multimedia- then look at the audio tab, and look for playback preferred device and see if either the drop down box is grayed out or if you have something there, if you have something there then let us know what devices are listed. Mark, the drivers would still need to come off the windows cd for that controller right?

Serial controller usually references a modem.

Okay, some of the drivers, such as PCI Serial controller, PCI bridge, are internal drivers, meaning that hardware stuff, onto the Motherboard such as Chips. Your Windows ME cd-rom should have the drivers for those, so what you need to do, is go to start-settings, control panel-add new hardware, and let windows find the new hardware when it finds the bridge, and the serial controller, you need to select, install drivers from a location, and then it will ask you where do I search from? That is when you have the windows Me disc in the drive, and it should install from one of the cab files located on your disc. And the information about the sound card, and video, is still a little vague, because you could have an actual Card, or the sound, and video could be embedded within the PCI chipset itself. Yes, you can upload the files to a floppy, or cd disc if you have a burner on this computer, and then download them to your Compaq. I still cannot get that manual to download, but have you ran Aida32? I think that would help us, help you find what you need. The headphone jack, is that the jack on your PC or somewhere else?

Josh thanks for your help before. Here is what I think I know.

Compaq deskpro. Intel Celeron 733MHz, stepping 686,cache size 32/128mb, system ROM,686PO v2.04, Chassis serial #6037FR4ZL336.
Problems: pixels limited to 16 colors. No sound from back of computer plug, but can plug speakers into headphone jack and get sound.

I need PCI drivers:
PCI Serial controller
PCI Multi media audio device
PCI bridge
PCI video

Is that enough info on what type of deskpro I have now? It seems I'm missing all the pci drivers. the computer is not currently online. but i had it online before. Is tyhere a way to save the drivers to a disk on another computer then install them on the deskpro?
