I don't believe this... You don't NEED a driver for *any* optical drive in Windoze. It's all built-in and the systen sees them all as plain old CD-ROM. I think you're talking about a so-called "Packet Driver", such as DirectCD or ABCD. These are just utilities that glue a UDF filesystem on top of the old CDFS and call it something new. Seemed like a good idea at first, what with drag-and-drop access to the burner, but there's something just not right about it. I stopped using it years ago. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Yea that should work for you, and if you have the Nero cd-rom then use that because I like Nero. Go to www.download.com and then type in burning rom and then make sure that the drop down menu is set to downloads and see if you can find any free burning Rom. Yes XP should pick that right away and it should work fine. Theoretically, that should work if you just install the new copy over the old copy, however there can be problems, if it were me, then I would format and start fresh. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Snapped to the Rixo thing (better than nothing, right?); am going to seek that burning software you were talking about. It HAD Nero installed, but the moron that loaded it onto the system didn't know what he was doing; the bloody Nero package wouldn't write a SINGLE filetype- no matter what option you tried, ya got diddly-squat. BY THE WAY: can I assume that this CD-RW drive is either Plug 'n' Play or supported by XP? I tried updating the driver, and the system informed me that the present driver was more current. I ask because I bought a new operating system to replace the pirated copy the retailer had "blessed" me with, and I'll need to reformat my hard drive (won't I? Won't I encounter problem(s) if I try to install one system over another without reformatting first?). IP: Logged |

Yea make sure and see if that works, if you cannot let us know. When you have the CD-RW in your computer, then system will see that, but windows will not know how to use it. Unless you have some sort of software a program burning ROM that can make use of the CD-RW. Windows XP has burning ROM built into it by Rixo, it is kind of simple in design but it still works. What you may need, is some other burning ROM such as Nero and the many others out there. That is so true backup upon backup, we should be able to get this working so that you do not have to buy a new drive. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Hmmm...THOUGHT I did, but, I'll make sure. Skeptical, because I've never run into this problem before (I am not new to CD-RWs). I'm trying to track down the correct driver & installation software for my LG Electronics rewritable drive, and I'm not having much luck there. There's one thing I wish I could drum into people's heads: NEVER, EVER DELETE WHAT YOU NEED AND HAVE NOT BACKED UP. If I can't fix this with locating the software I need, I have to buy a whole new ****ed drive! A POX on the previous owner (and the retailer who sold it to me, who, incidentally is being investigated by Microsoft for Hard Disk Loading piracy). Oh, yeah...NEW EMAIL ADDRESS (which I am going to change right now in my profile). IP: Logged |

Try this, open up my computer then go to your disc that you want to change, then right click the icon go to explore. Then once their, right click a file you want to change the name too and click rename type in the name you want it then after that press enter, does the name change? And to delete a file while still in my computer and you are viewing the contents of a cd-rw press the delete key, does it go away? Note you can only do this to CD-RW's. Does this work for you? ------------------ IP: Logged |

Okay: It's a CD-RW; I use that kind of disk, not CD-R. This is what I'm used to doing in this situation: Write, say, eight files onto the disk. Change two of the filenames after I do that, and delete one of the ones I just put there. I can't do that; the only software I have to do this is the CD-RW-writing program that comes with Windows XP OS, which presents the following problems: 1) I cannot change filenames. 2) I cannot delete selected files- only erase the entire disk and rewrite as I elect to. I may EDIT files, change the CONTENTS, but I cannot accomplish #1 & #2 (I an working with data files; I don't care about movie or audio files. 3) Evidently, this software writes in a non-standard format, because the CD-ROM drive will reject any disk that is written using this software. That CD-ROM drive accepts all OTHER disks, so I think there's "something scwewy going on here, wabbit!" IP: Logged |

What you want to do, is burn files to a cd disc? What program do you use to to write files to your cd disc? ------------------ IP: Logged |

My CD-RW drive is an LG CD-RW CED-8080B. When it was installed by the original owner, the system was running Windows 3.1. It is now running Windows XP, and the correct driver had been lost before I got the PC, so the default driver is file: cdrom.sys. Specific problem I think is due to wrong driver: I'm supposed to be able to change filenames and delete selected files (without erasing ENTIRE DISK first and THEN re-writing), but I can't. How do I get the most up-to-date driver? IP: Logged |
