If you put the Me disk in the drive then it should start up, or if you get an error message then let us know what the error message is. If this method does not work then we will have to go into the BIOS and change the boot order and then boot off the Me while not in Windows. To uninstall Windows totally would mean have to format the drive and delete everything. Or we could just try and delete the Windows directory, let’s try the easy stuff first. I don’t know how we could make this smoother, other then what we are trying. And you do have your Windows key code right? You are welcome for the help.

Just put the disk in and use the install new program feature?
Will this potentially cause more problems, being that I wouldn't uninstall ME first?
Are there tricks to making this process smoother?

Thanks Josh!

Well the only thing I can think of right now then to uninstall Direct X or the certificates is to just reinstall Windows. Now you won’t loose any thing, so don’t worry about that.

I found "catroot" in the system32 folder; no catroot2.
Inside the folder catroot there is another folder with a long alpha-numeric name {F750E6C3-...EE}.
Inside this folder are multiple "security catalogs"-- 1,2,oem1, oem2, and oem3.
I opened the catalog "1". It went online and a window came up. Under the "general" tab, it states that " this security catalog is not valid. The certificate that signed this security catalog is not valid." infact they all say the same thing.
--------------
What I meant by "ideas" was that I figured ME was to blame for the methods not working. That's all.
Thanks

Okay on Method four, Windows Me most likely does not support those because Windows Me does not have any services like, NT, 2000 and XP does. For Method 1 lets try to go to the file manually, so open up my computer- go to your hard drive, then go to Windows-then look for system 32 then look for catroot2 then look for the file Edb.log if you cannot find, use the search feature that Me has, then look for Edb.log, do you see the file? Your ideas what are they?

More problems...

I ran the "Command" prompt.
It put me in C:\windows\desktop-
I tried running the methods there and it said "path not found" for method 1, and "bad command or file name" for method 4.

I've got some ideas on what the problems are, but I'll leave it to the one who knows what they're talking about.
thanks

I will have to be honest with you; I have no idea why Microsoft released Windows Me, other then to get money, because it is garbage, no offense to you. I would actually use Windows 98 Se any day then Me on the 32 platform. Instead of doing cmd try command it is the same command it’s just another version. After you have done the command then let us know what happens if that does not work, if that does not work, then you may have to try it in safe mode. To get into safe mode reboot your PC and when you PC completely restarts and about 2 seconds after it does press the F8 key and before the Windows splash screen, so when you get to that menu choose safe mode, try system restore that way. Let us know if you have any problems, you are welcome for the help.

I ran the /restore peramater.

Then I couldn't get the system restore to work.
It claims I don't have enough memory on the drive (200mb), but there is more than that available.

When trying to run "cmd" an error message came up saying cmd can't be found, so I can't do any of the methods!!?!?!

WTF? can it get any more frustrating?
Thanks for the research,
Lassoo-

Sorry I thought you had XP, so lets try this instead of the /fix parameter when you did the scanreg try this one /restore choose a backup that has completed, then try to install Direct X. Okay so go back here http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=822798 try Method 1, Method 4 (even though it may not allow you to do anything) Method 5 Method 8 make sure you do Step 2 of Method 8, Method 9, and Method 10. After you try each step try to install Direct X, also before you do the Method’s but after you have done scanreg/restore make sure you do a system restore. You are welcome for the help

Yes, I downloaded it from microsoft.

I am running Windows ME and most of the help is related to XP. So, I can't "enable" Cryptographics as described on the help sites.

I have successfully re ordered my registry by running -- scanreg.exe /fix. but that didn't fix the problem. (found this at "Ask Leo.com" or something like that.)

Any ideas? Thanks
