I made a mistake. My friend has Windows ME on her computer. So I guess this could have been posted in the Win 98 forum.

I'm assuming this makes quite the difference. Please help us out.

For the HP, do you have service pack two of Microsoft Windows XP installed? And the IBM ThinkPad, what operating system is on that system?

The main computer that I'm talking about is running Windows XP... plus I'm not sure what is causing this problem, so I didn't know if its a software or hardware issue.

Please move it if I posted it in the wrong forum.

My friend asked me for some help on this...

The system (an HP Pavillion purchased in 2000) often hangs on shutdown, where it shuts windows down and everything, but hangs at a blank screen with the white blinking underscore.

I've also had this problem quite frequently with my IBM Thinkpad (old model, 760EL).

Please help us out.
