Okay have a look at this for info on auto protect, you may have to reinstall the product, first have a look at this, and try each step to see if they help you. If you can remember the error message then let us know, as that will help us help you.

Cant remember exact words but that was pretty much what it said. If u know any way to fix this lemme know i dont really care much that auto protect doesnt work since i'm glad i got my sound back and cuz i usually do a full system scan once a week and its usually fine. Thanks Ryan

System Restore did the trick huh, glad to hear it, what Antivirus program do you have? It does not load when Windows starts up, or when you manually open it? Do you get any error messages, when you try to do so? If you try to manually open it, what happens?

Yes, your files are safe, try that and see if that works.

Hi, thats good to know that my files will be safe. I did a virus check with norton and its all good. Under sound and game controllers it says:
Gameport joystick
SoundMAX integrated Digital Audio
Wave Devices for voice modem
Their are no Exclamation marks. I'll try a system restore later. Thanks Ryan

Your welcome no, system restore will not delete any files, so everything will be safe, what system restore does, is it takes a snapshot of critical Windows files, such as the registry, core related files that pertain to the Operating system, not you files or programs that were made or installed by you. It takes a snapshot when certain things happen like a critical registry change, maybe a hardware change, or even a software change. That way you can revert to any change that has been made. However, by you telling me that the volume is grayed out, then that would have me believe that we may need to reinstall your sound device or there is a problem with it. So try this right click the my computer icon, then go to properties then device manager then look for sound and game controllers, click the + and tell us everything you see listed under there, including any exclamations marks, if any are present. This is not related to your problem but to system restore, should you ever have a virus on your computer, never use a system restore, you may think that when you use system restore, you will delete the virus, but the virus will be there when you complete the system restore.

Lets make sure that the volume is not muted or the volume is turned down to low. Go to start-programs-accessories-entertainment-volume control, from here you can check the volume. If that does not work, then we can try a system restore. To perform a system restore with Windows Me, you should go to start-programs-system tools, and from there you should see system restore, then you should be able to do a system restore. If the only option in system restore is to create a restore point, then exit system restore. Then go to start-run then type in command then press enter then at the command line type scanreg/restore press enter. You will then start the scanreg restore wizard which will restore your registry to a date that you wish, choose a date before the problem started to happen then press enter, after the process is complete, you will need to restart your computer. If that does not help, right click the my computer icon, then go to properties then device manager then look for sound and game controllers, click the + and tell us everything you see listed under there, including any exclamations marks, if any are present.

Hi on Friday my comp froze and after i restarted it my sound didnt work. Before my comp froze i was listening to music and chatting on msn. The last thing that i can rememeber installing was Yahoo messenger which was about a week before this all happened. I've tried a few things and none of them worked. If any 1 knows anything i can try let me know. Thanks Ryan
