Joyful jet, it may be possible that the hard drive activity light is on the wrong jumper position.

Seems we ran into the same problem. It is a compaq computer, WindowsME. Hard drive light stays on all the time EXCEPT when the hard drive is running, downloading etc. I ran ever virus scan I could find, 4 or 5 different spy ware programs and each time came up with nothing. Tried diagnostics and still came up with nothing. Finally replaced the power supply and that didn't work so I replaced the hard drive and guess what...the hard drive is still steady on. Amazing. So okay, I have a hard drive light that insists on running all the time. I'll just have to adjust, since I don't think there is a fix- maybe it is something to do with the motherboard and when she finally blows up I assume the hard drive light will go out!

Josh1, Sorry for the delay, I realize you like to close these things. The condition
still exhists. Checked with process chr and it shows minimal activity. The pc has two hd's and this only occurs on c drive. Thanks Uncle Shorty.

Okay lets go ahead and download and run process explorer. This tool will tell us if any of your CPU is being used, download the tool from here: http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml when the hard drive starts to light up then open this and see if the CPU usage is high.

Yes, sorry I didn't completely post the Question. Ran defrag, ad-ware, panda virus scan, everything short of reformatting. When the light is on nothing makes it go out short of re booting. Thanks

Have you ran a defrag, and ran Adaware or Spybot?

Win Me, After pc is on for awhile the hd light comes on and stays on. Checked for apps running in background, also other stuff. The only way it stops is to reboot.
