Well that is wonderful to hear it was simple to fix, and a reinstall was not needed. Thanks for letting us know how you fixed it. ------------------

Did you ever get this to work? ------------------ For every problem, there is a solution. IP: Logged |

Sure, first we need to get into your BIOS, when you first turn on your computer, look for a message that says, press this key to enter setup, and whatever that key is, then press it. Now into the BIOS, depending on your BIOS, the menu may be different, but look under BIOS features setup (may have a different name) then press enter. Now look for BIOS bot order or boot sequence, and change that value to have your CD-ROM boot first, or make sure the 1st boot device is your CD-ROM, now remember to save changes and exit. Make sure the ME CD-ROM is in the drive, before you do this, then exit the BIOS saving changes, and the computer should reboot, now the computer will then boot from the CD drive. From this point on, I don’t know the how the setup screens will be because I have never installed Me or see anyone do it this way, but I assume it is just like 98 so we should be okay. Now you want to start the computer with CD-ROM support, and then files will load so that you can use your CD-ROM and then you should be at a prompt. If it says E:\ then great, but if not then just type E:\ then press enter, then type in setup and press enter. If you already have the E:\ just type in setup, now scandisk may or may not run, let it run, then after that or if it does not run you will be in setup. You have an upgrade version of ME so I don’t know if it will work or not. Assuming you do not get an error message continue with setup, make surer that windows installs in the C:\windows, not C:\windows.000 now continue with setup. Setup will reboot your machine 2 or 3 times, I believe. On the 1st reboot make sure that you go back in your BIOS and change the boot order to whatever is was before, the save changes and exit. Setup should continue let it finish and then see if your problems with system restore are gone, if you have any problems then let us know, if you are unsure of anything then let us know. You will also need your windows 25 product key. ------------------ For every problem, there is a solution. IP: Logged |

Probably best to get your instructions about this. Windows Me is currently in my E drive. IP: Logged |

You could be correct, but it seems like the registry is messed up if it cannot find SFC. Can you boot off the windows ME CD-ROM, and then get to a CD-ROM prompt and run setup? So try to boot off the Me CD-ROM, then get to the prompt change to your CD-ROM drive, that has the Me disc in it and then type setup, and see what it says. If you do not know how to do this then let me know. I encourage you to try and get this problem fixed, as it seems that your registry is not in the best shape and possibly it may get worse. Also, with a reinstall you may not need to delete stuff, however with an upgrade version, you may be correct. ------------------ For every problem, there is a solution.

sfc....run but "Windows cannot find sfc..............etc". Reinstall .... yes I have Windows 98 SE and the Me upgrade, however it looks a total pain to delete and reinstall, with backups etc. From memory I actually tried to use "System Restore" twice and it failed on both occasions. So will leave things as they are. Thanks again. IP: Logged |

Another thing you could try, is run SFC, go to start-run type in sfc and allow windows to search for bad files and then it can fix them. ------------------ For every problem, there is a solution. IP: Logged |

The "system restore" in Windows Me is well known not to work very well. That's one of the reasons I went to Windows XP Pro. IP: Logged |

Sytem Restore fails to work always requiring a reboot which fails to make any difference and gives the error message again requiring a reboot. So it goes round in circles! Thanks. IP: Logged |
