You are correct. I think the fix must have come in an automatic Windows update download or something because the "Illegal Box" has disappeared. Thanks again for helping me understand the problem and in "predicting" the ultimate outcome of the situation. You guys are fantastic!

MS released a fix for this earlier this week so your problem should be gone now.

Here is exactly what it is, "Realtek HD Audio Sound Effect Manager"

It does not in any way affect the normal use of the card just allows some of the options to be controlled, you could easily never use it in your lifetime and never even miss it.

This is not actually a Microsoft problem but rather a poorly written bit of code from Realtek, MS may release a fix but Realtek is actually responsible for this.

I would imagine that after eveyone sends the error message to MS this will be addressed one way or the other.

Thanks for the info on the cause of the "Illegal Box." Do you suggest that I should try to delete it, or is it so complcated that I should just live with it. As I've told you, I'm not very computer savy, so if it's complicated,I'll just live with it as long as I know it isn't anything very serious or harmful to the programs on my computer. Is it going to affect the sound on music or video clip downloads? Does Windows Updates know about this problem, and are they likely to have an update that will eventually fix it? Thank you for your time and effort in helping me with my problem.

That is an error related to the sound card utility, one of the last windows updates causes it to create that message.

I fixed on my system by deleting the registry entry for it but that is not an easy task for all.

It is found under HKeyLocalMachine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run

Thank you for your speedy reply. I tried a system restore twice, but both time it failed. Any ideas as to why this happened? I'll give you a word-for-word description of the warning box I get when I start my computer up: the title on the box is "RTHDCPL.EXE--ILLEGAL SYSTEM DLL RELOCATION" (there is a big red X) The message in the box is "The system DLL user 32.dll was relocated in memory. The application will not run properally. The relocation occurred because the DLL C:/WINDOWS?system32?HHCTRL.OCX occupied an address range reserved for Windows system DLL. The vendor supplying the DLL should be contacted for a new DLL." I don't understand any of this, so I hope you do. I have noticed that I have been having a problem with my printer responding to the PRINT command. Sometimes its will print and sometimes it will not print, but when I restart the computer it prints the material it had previously refused to print. Could this be the problem? Would this cause the warning box I've been getting? Any other suggestions as to how I can get rid of the warning box? Thank you for your help in solving my problem.

I have Windows XP and everytime I start my computer a Windows information box with the tile IllEGAL pops up and says that C:/WINDOWS/system 32/HHCTRL.OCX has been put in the wrong place and that I need to notify my vendor supplying the DLL for a new DLL. First of all, what does this mean? Is it something really serious? And, how can I stop the box from popping up everytime I start my computer--it's pretty annoying. Thank you for your time and effort in helping me solve this problem.
