How about if you just leave the drive as Master on the Secondary IDE channel, with no other drives attached to it?

Shows up in the BIOS with the correct device name. Also, when I exchange the drive to another one, it is recognized correctly.

Does the drive show up in the BIOS? You may have to change the jumper settings, if the drive does not show up in the BIOS. Let us know if it does not

I have a very strange phenomenon on my computer and I am at the end of my tethers.

My DVD drive (D vanished some day from the explorer and is not accessible or when it appears, only sporadically.

Of course I have done the WIn trouble shooting.

I have checked the connections (power and data), exchanged cables, exchanged the drive against two other CD RWs, no success.

The respective drive appears in the control panel's Hardware (is recognized by P&P) and the driver is supposed to be the latest version. I have even downloaded other driver versions, erased and reinstalled the drivers.

I am told by the control panel "the device is in proper working condition". Any idea, what I still could do? Is this a hardware or a software problem???
