I think some registry files/keys/whatevers have been deleted from my user account on my laptop. A lot of things don't function like they used to, for instance,

most programs i try to run install themselves first and when i try to run windows media player it keeps looping the "Welcome to Windows Media Player 9 series" installation dialogue thing. I click Next, Next then Finish and it starts all over again.

When I clicked on Jasc Paint Shop Pro 8 it tried to install and then the error message "Unhandled exception in InitInstance, code = 1554, what = Registry access error" comes up and the program doesn't run either.

My desktop wallpaper has been set to a blue screen and when I try to change it in Display Properties (i click Apply and OK), nothing is changed. It works on the other user, but the programs don't. Also, the program list above, not after, the “All programs >” in the start menu has disappeared, it’s just blank now. It’s still there on the other user.

I don’t know if this is all related or not but I can't access certain web pages through IE, such as Mugglenet.com where the status bar reads "Opening page http://www.mugglenet.com/..." then "Web site found. Waiting for reply..." but then it goes back to "Opening page..." and the most I see is a black background before it does. It keeps reloading Microsoft.com, Yahoo.com and The-Leaky-Cauldron.com like that as well, but it works for LiveJournal.com and Google.com. When I try to clicking on the "Save Changes" buttons on LiveJournal.com and "Google Search" on Google absolutely nothing happens. I can't download anything either, it just keeps on retrieving file information then saying the website couldn't be found.

I'm not sure if the internet stuff has to do with my new modem or what but everything (including the stuff unrelated to the internet) started happening yesterday after this guy installed the modem. I know this guy is very useless and he was seen fiddling around with registry, I don't know, I wasn't there so I have no clue what's going on, and very little knowledge about computers in general so help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
