Joe has a good point. What you need to do is either take a vacuum cleaner and clean the inside, or use compressed air, or even using cutips with some rubbing alcohol to clean the blades of the fan. Dirt and dust are the main reason of overheating in the PC. And you need to disconnect power when you do this from the back of the PC, and from the power supply going into the motherboard. So you need to clean the fans, the case fans the fan on the back of the power supply and the CPU fan. When you clean the fan on the power supply make sure not to open it. Either just vacuum what you can or blow it with compressed air. And you don’t have to take the heatsink fan off the top of the CPU, unless you know how and you can then pout it back. Well if you were to open the case you could see for yourself if it is dusty.

Because cigarette smoke has tar in it dust clings to it more than just regular dust alone, therefore simply blowing it off may not do the trick, you might have to wipe things down too, of course with something that won't generate static. I'd say to just keep your case on the floor where the smoke won't get to it so much. The thing about dust is that when it creates a layer over your computers parts it acts as an insulator, trapping in the heat, and of course you know that heat is a computers biggest enemy. But thats just my amatuer opinion from one smoker to another

How necessary is it to clean off or blow out the computer's insides if it is in an apartment with a smoker? And if so Any parts in particular? Is there any tell tale signs of clogged ...whatevers?

Thank you very much!
