First what is luResult.txt, is that something on your PC is this a file within the folder you need to get?

Well I would say the syntax was wrong, but this error message “the system cannot find the file specified” says what it is. my backup – The “—“ is that part of the file name?
Now when you did the command

subinacl /object_type : /file \\AMIE\* /setowner=AMIE\administrator did you need to include the /object_type syntax in the command, did you try it that way?

Or did you just try

subinacl /file c:\my backup -- 06-02-22 0106am\documents and settings\owner\luResult.txt /setowner=owner Without the /object_type: Also did you include the /setowner=AMIE\owner

I think what may be the problem is that you tried to take ownership of the file, hence using the /file switch in the command. So try the subdirectory syntax

So you will have to go back to your main folder of backup, unless the folder you are trying to get has other folders within it. So lets try this, can you access any folders withn the C:\MyBackup directory? Okay the C:\MyBackup might be the main folder with many other folders called subdirectories within that folder. So you need to take control of the subdirectories within C:\MyBackup. SO try the command

subinacl / subdirectories c:\my backup (if that is the complete name of this folder if not then put the whole path) /setowner=owner

Let us know if this worked

k i tried

subinacl /file c:\my backup -- 06-02-22 0106am\documents and settings\owner\luResult.txt /setowner=owner

to try to gain acess to that file but it came up with failed and it said "the system cannot find the file specified" lol i feel soo close but yet soo far

Okay I am learning this to as I have not used this command before but try this parameter

subinacl /object_type : /file \\AMIE\* /setowner=AMIE\administrator

Now I am not sure either before the : after object type you need to specify the file name but it is most likely after the /file you need to put the complete path to this folder. And for setowner you need to put your name of the Administrator you have

You may need to take ownership of that file or folder, and this may do it You can download the tool here http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e8ba3e56-d8fe-4a91-93cf-ed6985e3927b&displaylang=en
Now information on this tool and how to use it can be found here http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;265360
This is more in-depth info on the tool http://www.zdnetasia.com/insight/network/printfriendly.htm?AT=39094488-39000223c-2

You could but you would need a third party program to do so, if you do the partitioning (Splitting) that windows has you need to format your hard drive to do so.

I think what happens is that when you formatted something got lost in the format, either in the way the folder was created or who it was saved by. I am going to try to find some other information for you so that we can try to see if we can get your data back.

Try the General tab and look for advanced at the bottom of the window, do you see that? Never mind about the command line I was going to try to move it but if we cannot even get into that folder then moving will still not give us access to open it.

Okay I don’t know if this will help or not, but try it, go back to the properties of that folder, then look for the security tab, are all the privileges set to allow? And how are you browsing to that file what method are you using to get to the file, where are you clicking and what are you clicking? And if you go to your folder with the pictures in them, go to attributes then go to advanced, make sure encrypt contents to secure data is not selected. If that does not work, see if you can get to a command line, try this go to start-run then type in cmd if you see a black screen great, let me know if you can see a black screen. Go ahead and then type in exit to close the window.

Hmm okay, what are the choices you have when you login? Do you have a user account called owner, if so is that yours? Before you formatted, were the user accounts the same as they are now? Meaning that the names and the privileges are still the same.

That file name and error message you gave us, seems like that the owner or the administrator of whoever installed or copied those files to the hard drive was deleted when you did the format. So infact the files hopefully, so we just need to get to them. Okay try these http://www.cddataguys.com/data-recovery.html www.highergroundsoftware.com www.recovermyfiles.com www.uneraser.com/undelete.htm Are you logged on this machine as Administrator? I don’t know if you can do this with a Media Center PC, but can you boot into safe mode? To find out try this, before the media center splash screen and about two seconds after you restart the machine, press F8 until you get to a menu then from that menu go to safe mode and see if you can view the files.
