one problem seems to be my floppy disk. theres no format.com file on it. my wife is gonna try remaking the start up disk while I'm at work today, hopefully it will put the correct files on there for me. thanks for the info.

Okay lets try the floppy method. First thing to check to make sure that the boot disk is bootable and that the format command is on the floppy disk. If you can view the contents on the disk on another computer make sure you see Format.com. Or if you are in a command prompt, at the prompt you can type dir and see the listing of the files on the disk. So when you are ready to format, just go ahead and type format C: press enter and then answer yes. Formatting starts, because you are using a floppy disk to format you cannot use the NTFS; you can only use FAT32 or FAT. So if you wish to use NTFS you will need to format again using the windows setup method, but this time it should work for you. If that does not work then you can try the Recovery Console to format: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/getstarted/backup.mspx

heres the thing, Ive tried reformatting this hard drive with both a cd, and a floppy, in 2 different computers. Ive tried the same thing with an extra hd I have, and get the same error. sounds like the cd is the problem, but like I said, Ive reformatted with this cd before with no problems.
the difference between my problem, and the problems Ive been readig about, is that they can get the setup screen up, where the choice to repair, setup etc. I cant even get that far.

so for a recap, Ive tried bootin with cd and floppy, with 2 different hd's, on 2 different systems, with a cd Ive reformatted with before, always get the error 'a SIF file ___.inf is missing or corrupted and setup cannot be completed. press any key to continue' pressing a key just reboots back to same error message.

It could be a driver issue or some sort of hardware conflict of failure or some sort of value of a driver needs to be changed. I am not sure. The hard drive could have an error that would prevent from installing Windows, but it would have to be a physical defect not a corrupt file. You know I would suggest the old way booting with a cd-rom boot disk not a windows one. Booting with a floppy cd boot disk and using the format command. Would you like to do that? Does your computer have a floppy drive?

I have been trying for a week now to reformat my hard drive. I set the bios to boot from cd first, put in the authentic win xp cd, restart, and it brings up 'press any key to boot from cd...'
heres where things go wrong. I hit a key, it says its preparing for set up. then I get an error that says 'connot complete set up, SIF file sys.inf is missing or corrupt. press any key to restart'
I have never seen this before, first thought was the cd was bad, but then I remembered I reformattd this same computer just over a year ago. I even tried formatting a different hd on the same comp, as well as both hd's on a different comp.
any ideas would be greatly appreciated. my next step will be to contact microsoft, but not sure what thier policy is on replacing cd's, esecially one Ive had for almost 2 years.
last thought... is it possible the hd would have an error that would corrupt the system itself, and prevent a format from completing???
