Okay lets try this, repair Internet Explorer here are the instructions on how to do that http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q318378. Repairing XP takes a little bit more effort then hurling it out of the window. Here are the instructions for the repair http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm if you have any problems then let us know. Try the repair of Internet Explorer first, make sure you do a system restore point before you do this.

Thanks Josh, however , restarting as you advised has not fixed the error with or without SP2 installed. Does a repair involve throwing the lap top out of the window ?

Okay lets try this, before you install SP2, restart your PC then when your PC restarts and before the Windows XP splash screen press the F8 key until you get to a menu, from that menu choose last known good configuration, if that does not work then you may have to do a repair. Or by just reinstall SP2 that may fix the problem.

Unfortunately I cannot restore the system, even though all seems to work fine until it re-starts and says 'cannot restore system, Your computer has not been changed' I have un-installed SP2 but am left with the original problem of icons (some not all) not responding on the net. So it's not SP2 and no cleaning tools are showing up any problems. Any other ideas out there ?? I am putting SP2 back on

Thanks Josh however,'System Restoration Incomplete' keeps appearing after what seems like a normal restore. Also cannot go back further than 2 months (original problem remains) Could this have anything to do with the infamous SP2 added in sEPT 2005 (CANNOT GO BACK FURTHER THAN THIS DATE IN RESTORE SYSTEM)

If this problem has just started to happen have you tried a system restore? For future reference, PC cleaners that say they will fix and delete unused entries in the registry, I would be very careful about using those, as they can cause more problems then fix.

I am having problems while on the internet. Example. When signing on to ebay, after entering user name and password I press 'Sign in Securely' and nothing happens (it use to say 'error on page')The same thing happens on other action keys such as 'download now' or 'delete' on the net. It doesn't happen on all action buttons , hence me registering on this message board. I have cleaned up the registry using PC Tools Software, scanned with Norton and fixed any probs discovered. All very frustrating.
Anyone out there got any more ideas ?
