Thanks to all that replied to the "Out of Range" problem. Found out it was a problem with the docking station - which has been replaced.

Have you used an external monitor on the docking station?

Sue.

Here is some more information on system restore http://www.microsoft.com/technet/community/newsgroups/faqsrwxp.mspx#EDAA you might not be able to perform a system restore to the date that the problem started happing unless you made a restore point. Look here for information on restore points and how to set them. http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/xpsysrst.mspx

A system restore does not delete anything, and it will not mess up your system, it is really impossible to mess something up when doing a system restore, the computer does it all. All you do is tell the computer at which date to restore too. If you need help in doing this then let us know and we can walk you though it.

I have not tried that. I am not comfortable in doing that at this time but may be a last resort. Not sure of the reprecussions. Thanks

You said it happened after the icons became messed up and you tried to change the resolution, have you tried doing a system restore prior to that?

Yes, when I use it as a regular laptop - it is fine. Just when I plug into the docking station. Thanks,

Does the error message happen when the machine is docked?

I have a docking station and when booting the PC, the monitor comes up with "Out of Range" 1024 x 728. I have tried to set my resolution on the laptop to the lowest but still get the message. This all started when, for some reason, my icons were the smallest possible one morning when I booted the machine. When I tried to change the resolution, the "out of range" message began. I am using XP. Thanks,
