You might want to unplug the modem if it is a (DSL or cable connection) from the computer, a virus scan most likely will not detect most spyware; you need spyware programs for that. Go here http://www.footslog.com/board/Archives/Archive-000003/HTML/20050327-16-000026.html and download Adaware, Spybot, and MS Antispyware run them all, and delete all objects found. Let us know if this helps. I am going to move your topic to Cyber Safety you can go to your topic here: http://www.footslog.com/board/Forum18/HTML/000536.html

One of my Uncle's called me over to his house to install Panda Antivirus Platimun (easy task right?).

I downloaded Panda from download.com and went through the installation process. I then activated the product with the infomration supplied. I restarted the computer through the start menu and it did the shut down portion just fine. During the boot up portion is had to complete a scan disk on the drive before it would start. I then go onto the computer at which time it was even more bogged down then before (it is an old computer so that is not too surprising - Celeron 400/256 Ram). At this time Pop-ups started to come onto the screen (spyware) which bogged the computer down further. I then disabled All startup's to attempt to get rid of the spy/adware programs. I then got onto the Trend Micro (House Call) website and did an online scan. During the scanning process, I received a blue screen which stated that it was dumping all physical memory from the computer. I have never personally seen this message before.

So it was decided that it would be easier to format the drive. So I had a Clean 10 GB HDD (freshly formatted) that I put in (after taking the old one out). I installed XP Home onto this drive and configured all the hardware settings (etc.) After I started Windows for the first time, Spyware started popping up onto the computer again. A program was auto installed called (fire something) which I looked up on Google and a website said that it was spyware. After that I attempted to get onto the Windows update site to download all the updates (running XP Home SP1) but I was unable to do so. I then attempted to download Adaware SE and it would only let it get 75% done before it froze the download. I attempted to do an online scan which froze 71% complete. I have lost my mind at how it could get infected when I first booted up.

Does anyone out there have any idea at what this could be or a way to fix it (do I need to format again?)

Thanks for your help

Ean
