If that person did not provide you with a legal copy of Windows XP, then you can get one from Microsoft, for free provided you do this

“In the U.S., Microsoft is now offering users running allegedly pirated versions of Windows XP Professional a different option. First, Microsoft will advise these users to attempt to get replacement copies from their resellers. But if that fails, Microsoft will offer them a completely free replacement copy if they can provide the actual counterfeit disks and receipts for the software. They also will need to fill out a counterfeit report, naming the resellers who sold the allegedly counterfeit products.
If users are unable to provide the alleged counterfeit disks, Microsoft will still offer them an opportunity to obtain replacement copies. But Microsoft will still require these users to fill out the aforementioned counterfeit reports, as well as allow Microsoft to perform a system scan of their PCs, which Microsoft says is meant to insure that "the system files are still in their original state." These users also will need to pay $149 for an electronic key for their replacement copies.”

If this person is distributing Microsoft products like this to more then one person, then we could contact Microsoft, to help them fight piracy if you wish.

FrontPage, Word, Excel, etc... have nothing to do with XP Pro, these are Office applications, it is asking you for the Office disks.

It is illegal to sell XP (or any Windows Operating System) without a COA (Certificate of Authenticity, the sticker on the outside of the computer) AND the hologrammed media, it is illegal to sell the Office components without the hologrammed media.

You can go here to test your products for legality, http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/ww/default.mspx

He needs to provide you a copy of Windows XP OEM software, if you suspect that the Operating system that he put on the computer was obtained illegally, and then you need to ask him about it. If he cannot tell you where he obtained the Operating system, then you need to not ask him for support. Then you need to buy Windows XP format and reinstall Windows XP. Where I live, there was a computer shop, that would buy one copy of Windows 98, then they would burn copies of Windows 98, and give them the brunt copy of Windows 98, needless to say they are no longer in business. That might be what he is doing to you. With XP, you had to activate your copy of Windows XP, and for every different copy of XP in the world, there is a unique number that you need to have for your copy of Windows XP, so if he did not provide with the number and CD, then I would not do business with him anymore. The problem you are having is trying to install Frontpage? Deleting Temporary files will not affect your computer, to where you would need to reinstall the Operating system. If this guy does provide you a CD, let me know what it looks like, and we can verify if that CD is from Microsoft.

Hello,

I had a local computer expert rebuild my home PC after my original processor burned out. He installed XP Professional (may have been boot-legged...I don't know). The computer has worked great for the 1st month. However, I am now unable to open any Microsoft component application (XL, Word, Powerpoint, etc. - Internet Explorer does work fine) as I get a message requiring that I load the XP Professional with Frontpage disk and allow Microsoft to "install components for Microsoft....."

Now this same computer guy wants to charge me $60 to reinstall XP (he never provided me a copy of the software), claiming that I must have deleted temp files critical to the start-up of these programs.

Am I getting scammed? I know that I have not deleted any files from my computer. Does Microsoft XP Professional have a mandatory reinstallation process for these programs? The rest of my computer is workig fine. Or, is there something else going on???

PLEASE HELP!!!!

Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
