Alright here is what you need to do

1. Start the registry editor (regedit.exe).
2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore.
3. If a DisableSR value doesn't exist, go to the Edit menu, select New, DWORD value, and create the value.
4. Set the value to 1 to disable System Restore or 0 to enable System Restore.
5. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\sr to prevent the System Restore service from starting.
6. Double-click Start, and set the value to 4 to stop the service from starting or to 0 for normal startup.
7. Close the registry editor
Go ahead and open the registry editor, then browse to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore. If you do not see a Disable SR value then go to the top and then go to edit then new DWORD create the value to 0 to enable System Restore. Then Do not make any changes to this value but go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\sr what is the value (Do not change anything on this value yet)

If you have any problems then let me know, if you don’t understand anything then do not continue with this.

Good point, well I will try to make it as clear as I can, so that you will not have any trouble. For some reason, system restore program does not work properly, so if the value that controls whether to keep it on or off has changed, we can turn it back on. What worries me is that the error message is a Policy one, so when we do change the value then the same error message may come back or the value that needs to be changed may have never been changed in the first place.

Well I tried to do that but the files were so long that I think your forum wouldn't let me post them! I kept getting "This page cannot be displayed". This was without the SR-ChgLog.LOG as it is REALLY long (as if these ones aren't!) nor the C--
RPxx-rp.LOG files as there are so many! Any other solutions?!?

Okay you should be able to open the txt files in notepad, open them up and then you can post the results in your reply, you may or may not be able to open the log files, if you can then try notepad or just double click the icon and see if it opens and that you are able to read it. Don’t worry about it, without asking question how would we learn?

Hi, Thanks for your reply. Here's what I've got:

Service status was 'automatic' and 'started'.

I tried system restore in safe mode but the same error message came up. As I said, I've tried srdiag but couldn't understand what I was looking at (!) so here is a list of what I have (do you not need to know the contents of the files?!?):

_driver.cfg
_filelst.cfg
C--RP78-restorepointsize
C--RP78-rp.log
(...these last two repeat to C--RP104)
drivetable.txt
fifo.log
machineguid.txt
rstrlog.dat
SR-ChgLog.LOG
SR-FileList.LOG
SR-Reg.TXT
SR-RP.LOG
SR-RstrLog.TXT

If you need me to send you any of the files, let me know. Any further suggestions? It's funny - I normally help others with comp stuff and I simply haven't a clue about this!

Yea its never a good idea to mess with the registry, so lets see if I can walk you through it. Alright the first article does not apply to you because you are using Home and not Professional. Let’s make sure the service is not disabled, go to start-control panel-administrative tools-services. Now the list is in alphabetical order, so hit the “s” key until you see system restore. Once found, double click it, make sure startup type is set to automatic, and service status is started, if it is not then do so, then hit apply and ok. Now if the service is already started then lets try this. Restart the computer, when the computer is restarting hit the F8 key until you get to a menu, then from that menu choose safe mode, then once in safe mode Windows try and start system restore, let us know if it does or does not work. Then restart your computer normally, if that does not work then try this. Go to start-run then type in srdiag.exe then press enter, a file should have been made that will help us help you, the file you made, you should be able to right click it and then look for extract, extract the files to the desktop. Now I have a question for you, that folder you extracted what files are in there? Let us know what happens and what the contents of that folder is, if you want to just tell us the names of the files within that folder, so we can help you.

Hiya,

Well, I've read that through and through but I'm not entirely clear what I should be scanning for!!! I've run srdiag.exe and got the CAB file but don't know what I'm looking at. I've flicked through the text files but can't see anything terribly helpful!
Other than that, I still can't find anywhere how to physically fix the problem. There are a couple of registry fixes but 1) I don't feel this will address the problem that's causing these symptoms and 2) I am a bit nervous to edit registry (sorry - bad experience!).

I'm new to this forum but it looks promising! I'm having a strange problem with System Restore. None of my system restore tabs are visible so it would seem like I wasn't logged in as an administrator. The error that I get when I try to load the system restore ultility is "System Restore has been turned off by group policy. To turn on System Restore contact your domain administrator." Again, this looks like I'm not logged in as an administrator. BUT I AM! I am the only user of this computer and 'guest' login is disabled. I do not login to XP each time I boot as there is only one user - me. If I go to users in control panel, I see that my user is an administrator. I can't find the answer to this one anywhere and you guys seem to know what you're talking about!

Many thanks in advance, Paul
