Sorry to hear that it did not work, the way we wanted too, but that it does work. You can always ask anything, there is an excellent program by Microsoft that will tell you all you need to know about networking, and how to set them up. It is pretty easy to download, install and use, and you can find it in the PC Networking forum, if you have any questions about anything then please ask. Your welcome for the help.

When I tried to install the driver you recommended, I got an "Illegal device" error message and the installer terminated. I threw up my hands.

Rather than waste any more of my time and your time, I reinstalled XP from the restore disks this morning.

I think this thread is at an end. You've been most helpful, even if the results were not as I had hoped. My next project is to set up a home network, so I might be back again soon.

Best regards.

No problem, were you able to install the file that you downloaded?

Thanks, Josh.

The eMachines website must check to see if the model number matches the one making the inquiry. I had no luck trying to access their website either since I am using another computer for the time being.

The video-drivers.com site worked well however. We might figure this out yet.

If that does not work, I don't know why it would not though. Go here http://www.emachines.com/support/drivers.html
Accept the terms, select the correct information, at this point the website is not working for me, so I don’t5 know what will happen next. But you should see a place to update or download a video update. Is that there on that page? Let me know, because I do not know what is on the next page.

T1470I found your video drivers here http://www.video-drivers.com/drivers/206/206370.htm make a folder on your desktop and then when the file is done downloading unzip the files into that folder which you just created. If you are still having problems with the general operations of your PC then let us know, and let us know how the video turns out.

Well, things are slightly different today. Instead of monochrome, I have four-bit, garish color. The desktop background is persistent and cannot be changed. Certain services, such as the troubleshooters in control panel are non-functional. There is no help, in other words.

A system restore save occurred automatically just after my problems started. Any previous restore points are not available--they don't even show up as existing!

The computer involved is an eMachines T4170 with a 32 kByte segment of shared video memory.

It took several attempts to boot it up this afternoon, as if the POS failed to find the keyboard. After I plugged in a spare, things seemed to work again, sort-of.

Registry cleaners, program cleaners, and thing like that really are just a waste of money and time. Did you run a system restore? Do you know how to do a system restore? What is the model, and model # of pc do you have, so that we can look up your computer specifications in case the restore does not work, and we can fix your video for you.

I'd like to try to fix the video first for the learning experience and to try to avoid a new install.

Even as I ran that cleaner program, I was uneasy. The attraction was that you could clean out temporary files, cookies, the internet history and the like from one central manager.

Thanks.

Its never good to use those types of programs as you see they most often delete the wrong thing, or things that do not need to be deleted often are. Have you tried a system restore? If you do a reinstallation with the restore disk, that restore disk will format your computer, and erase all you files, and restore the computer when you first got to your house. If it is just the video that is messed up, we can try to fix that so you do not have to delete anything if you wish. But if you want to do a reinstall then just let us know.

After running EasyCleaner (from Finland) to clean up the registry and looking for duplicate files (one of which I deleted), I found that at boot-up the display was now in monochrome only and that any attempt to change the display properties was denied, even though XP offered to correct the situation. That also failed.

Fortunately I had backed up the system to an external hard drive. Files and directories appear to be intact.

I can think of no solution other than to do a new installation from the recovery disk, then to copy selected folders back to the C: drive. I'd like to make the process as easy as possible. Any suggestions?

Thanks.
