Try plugging a PS2 or USB keyboard into one of the ports on the laptop, and it should work that way.

If it is the only key not working and it works intermittently it is indeed a hardware problem.

On your laptop, all you have is on Ctrl button? Do all the others keys work?

I have a R51 IBM thinkpad and all of a sudden my CTRL key is not working. Sometimes it does but a lot of times its not. I was told that its not a hardware problem. Checked the connection inside the keyboard and everything looks fine.

Need help!!
