I don’t know if Firefox can do that, but go to a picture right click it and then go to open with you should see your default programs such as Paint and Internet Explorer, then at the bottom half of that window you should see a bunch of programs listed there. If you see Firefox then select it, and check the box that says always use this programs to open this file. See if that works. ------------------

Okay how do I set Friefox as my default picture viewer? IP: Logged |

Oh, I have never used Firefox, I do not think you can do that in Internet Explorer, but that may be a feature in the future. So you are going to set your images that way? What you might could do, is have Firefox be your default picture viewer so it might be a little bit easier to set and view pictures for you. I know you can have the thumbnail option, but it might be a little bit easier that way. ------------------

What browser allows you to do that, Internet Explorer or another one? I know with Microsoft Office Picture Manager you can, XNView, and Irfanview. ------------------

I have all of those programs and have ran them all quite a few times but to no avail. I found out that I can still set the desktop background through an internet browser. IP: Logged |

Do you have Spybot, Adaware, or MSantispyware? If so then run them, if not then go to www.download.com and download them and then run the programs. Go here for the download of MSantispyware http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=321cd7a2-6a57-4c57-a8bd-dbf62eda9671&displaylang=en ------------------

Okay, how did has this problem been going on? When did you notice it not to work, what were doing, did you make any changes or anything? Try this, remember how I told you to go into safe mode, well press F8 again just as you want to go to safe mode, but when the menu comes up, do not go into safe mode, but do the last know good configuration, see if that helps. ------------------

Well then that rules out the my documents being corrupt, let me see if I can find anything on this for you. And you are not sure if you have a Windows XP cd-rom, this would not deal anything with emachines. ------------------

Hhhmm...Nope that doesn't seem to work, I saved a new image into My Computer and tried setting it as Desktop Background and nothing happened. IP: Logged |

Yea that would be annoying to change it each time, does this just happen when you have an image in you’re my documents folder? Have you tried to make a picture and save it somewhere else other then my documents, and see if you can make it work that way. If that does not work, then I am thinking we should save all you’re my documents stuff, and then delete that folder, and then recreate it, I am not sure but maybe that folder is corrupt or something. ------------------

That way sounds abit complicated since im not too good with editing the registry and things like that. IP: Logged |
|
Josh1 Administrator |
I just read in that link I gave you “To specify the wallpaper create a new string value called "Wallpaper" and set it to the full path and filename of the image.” What this means, is that if you want to change your background image again, you will need to edit the registry because a different picture is a different file, and if you read here “and set it to the full path and filename of the image” this will explain why you will need to edit the registry because of the file change. So if you want to do it this way, let me know, or if not I will look for another solution to your problem. Sorry I should have noticed that before I posted it, sorry. ------------------

Okay honestly I have no clue how to safely edit any of that stuff so if you could talk me through it that would be great. IP: Logged |

Okay lets try this, http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/1097/ But this requires editing the registry, and if you do not know what your doing, and you do the wrong thing, you can cause your system to not work. If you do not feel comfortable doing this then I can walk you through it. ------------------

No luck with either... ![]() When I created a new account and did it that way the results were the same as with my account, nothing happened. When starting it in safe mode the background was just black and after trying a few times to change it the background would not change. IP: Logged |

Lets try this, make another account, by going to control panel, and I think administrative tools- or system and maintenance, look for accounts, make a new account, then log off your current account, and then log onto that account which you just made, then try to right click and set an image as the background. If that does not work, then reboot your computer, press the f8 key, until you see a menu, then go into safe mode and then log onto “your” account. Then try to set an image as you did before, if it works or does not then reboot and log on normally. ------------------

What service pack are you running? To find out, go to my computer, right click the icon, then go to properties, then look for system it should say Service Pack 2, if you are running Service Pack 2. Here is info on how to obtain Service pack 2, if you do not already have it http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322389/EN-US/ ------------------

Let me have a look into this for you, I have never come upon this type of problem, I was thinking of reinstalling Windows, because that would work. However, you have an emachines pc, and the thing with that is that in order to reinstall windows would be to format your hard drive, and I am pretty sure you do not want to do that. The reason is that, that is how most restore disk’s works, unless you have the OEM Windows XP cd, so let me find another way for you. ------------------

Not that I know of, my PC is fairly new (around 7 months old) and had XP built into it so when I first started it XP installed. IP: Logged |

Allright, I went into paint and just made a black image and saved it to My Pictures as a Bitmap image, tried both ways of setting it as a desktop and neither worked. IP: Logged |

Josh1 Administrator |
Okay make a new image in paint save it as a bitmap, and try to see if it works, if not then we will try something else. ------------------

Neither of those options are working. IP: Logged |

Lets try this, copy a picture a Jpeg, and a Bitmap, into a different folder then try and right click and set on desktop as you did before, if that does not work, copy the image to the desktop and try to right click, and set to desktop image. Let us know what happens. ------------------

Hey, Im having a small but annoying problem, when trying to set my wallpaper as an image from any of the folders in "My Pictures" nothing happens. I click "Set as desktop background" in the picture tasks but nothing happens, I right click the image and click set as desktop background and again nothing happens, the image does not become my background, when I move an image into a folder like "my music" and try and set it as a background it still does not work. I can set an image as background by right clicking the desktop and going to background and browsing for the one I want, but thats annoying. When browsing though if I select a JPEG image I do not get a preview image but if it is a Bmap image I do get a preview image. Anybody have any clue what is going on? Thanks. IP: Logged |
