You may want to uninstall them both, I agree with Mark; you really do not need any programs like these, just a waste of money.

Both have been know to cause problems in some cases, not necessarily the culprit here.

Many "fix-it" products are best left on the shelf at the store.

What would Norton Clean Sweep and System Works have to do with this? I am curious because I have both. Thanks, Marilyn

Do you have Norton Clean Sweep or System Works?

Hi Josh1:

I also am having trouble with the topic: "fatal system error then blue screen shutdown." Following your suggestion, I found:

The Application Layer Gateway Service service failed to start due to the following error:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

Event 7000.

Any suggestions?
Thanks, Charley B.

Also try this, go to start-control panel, then administrative tools, then event viewer, and see if you can find that error, look at the time and date to help you find it. Then go to system log, and look for error in a big red circle. Then you can click on it to see what the error message is, and the event ID # let us know what that says.

What other software if any have you added? Those fixes you see listed are those that were install from Windows update, patches, and other fixes.

Yes and no... removing the MP3 software tremendously sped up the start up and i quit getting this "error - click ok" box. but the computer still will randomly shut down with the same "fatal system error" message i originally posted.

i was perusing the "add/remove" section and i have a bunch of programs listed as "Windows Hotfix XP KB" and 6 random numbers a bunch listed as "Windows Hotfix XP (SP2) Q" then 6 numbers. are these programs suppose to be there?

thanks again.

Did the uninstalling of the software do any good? No problem for the questions, how else would we learn?

thanks for the info. so the software i installed for my MP3 player could be the culprit? sounds like i should uninstall that software and see what happens.

apologies for the elementary questions, not computer savvy at all...

Here is what MS has to say on the subject,

"Resolving the Problem
The following suggestions are specific to Stop 0x21A errors. For additional troubleshooting suggestions that apply to all Stop errors, see "Stop Message Checklist" later in this appendix.

Stop 0xC000021A messages occur in a user-mode process and the most common causes are third-party applications. If the error occurred after installing a new or updated device driver, system service, or third-party application, you need to remove, disable, or roll back the driver, or uninstall the new software. Contact the software manufacturer about a possible update.
System file mismatch caused by partially restoring the system from backup media might cause this error (some backup programs do not restore files that they determine are in use). Always use backup software that is Windows XP Professional compatible.
If SYSTEM account permissions were altered, follow the procedures below to regain access to the boot partition:
Perform a parallel Windows XP Professional installation onto a separate partition or drive. Do not use the original drive and folder names because the new Windows XP Professional installation overwrites previous settings. Complete the second installation.
In the Run dialog box, in the Open box, type: c:
Right-click the original Windows XP Professional systemroot folder, and then click Properties.
Click the Security tab, and then grant the local SECURITY account full control of the systemroot folder and its subfolders.
Restart the system, and then select the original Windows XP Professional installation from the startup menu."

Been struggling with my computer of late. Start-up takes forever and my computer will intermittently freeze up, then give me a blue screen with the following message "stop: c000021a {fatal system error} The windows logon process system terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xC0000005 (0x00000000) (0x00000000) The system has been shut down"

I've run some free registry cleaner programs and they all identify several hundred "errors". I don't mind paying for a fix, but looking for guidance as to what my exact problem is so I don't pay for a registry cleaner when something else may be the culprit. Any advice greatly appreciated. TIA.
