I am just wondering. I tried to flash the bios up to 2.3 on the K7S41GX motherboard, but it looks as if all I could do was flash it back down over and over again. It will not accept the update. Any ideas? IP: Logged |

I build a few systems here and there and I have installed XP more than once or twice, it actually is a very stable OS. I have offices of people working on this daily and they aren't having any problems to speak of, certainly none of the type you mention. A great many things can cause on OS to be unstable and they are not necessarily related to the design or programming of the OS itself. Programs, drivers, hardware and other little odds and ends can cause any OS to crash repeatedly, it is difficult to get everything to play together nice at times.
If you do not see a reference to your particular issue in the BIOS updates then it is highly unlikely that an update would help you. I was not able to find ANY reference to the Duron CPU in ANY of the BIOS information which means it is not an issue with that board, meaning the board is designed to use a Duron with no problems. The board was designed after the Duron came out so it is completely compatible with it. It does seem on one hand that we are speaking different languages here as it seems neither of us is following the other entirely. What specific pages at Asrock are you referring to? The page for the K7S41GX clearly shows it can use a Duron, what "configurations" are you talking about? Can you provide a link? IP: Logged |

Mark: Bee-CAWS there are a lot of little things going wrong that should not be, and one Help source I consulted suggested that I check to see if my BIOS was up-to-date. It DOESN'T seem to be, and I cannot get any help on the matter from the motherboard manufacturer because the information they list for my motherboard is wrong- supported configurations of my specific motherboard IS NOT LISTED. If you don't understand why I'm saying what I am about the processor in reference to this issue, then you are JUST as mystified as I am. In order for you to understand the precise problem, YOU go to ASRock's pages on the K7S41GX motherboard, and YOU try to find BIOS stuff for one with an AMD Athlon Duron (they seem to think it's an issue, because THAT's how they list that stuff, and it only shows configurations completely alien to my board.). I don't even WANT to mess with it; I am NOT "in love with" the idea. I just want these stupid problems that shouldn't be happening to go away. I could understand it if I were screwing around with system files, but I'm not. "Stable" OS my gluteus maximus! IP: Logged |

I'm a little lost here, you are updating your BIOS because of???? What exactly are you trying to accomplish? I also don't understand your comment regarding the Duron CPU, the only time they would put in a reference to a CPU is if the original BIOS did not support it, that is why you see the Sempron references in the later versions. I won't. Will not consider it unless someone proves BIOS is the problem. IP: Logged |

Your welcome, I do not think you should flash the BIOS if you cannot find the right one. ------------------

Thanks, Mark. And Josh? The current BIOS version is 1.4, but it has no way of knowing which update I need. The manufacturer doesn't seem to know, either, They don't support the motherboard that is less than a year old, even though they list its architectrure. They list the K7S41GX, but NOT one with a Duron Athlon processor. IP: Logged |

"press pause if it goes by too quickly" The system information is useless in this case. IP: Logged |

Have a look here for info on flashing the BIOS, http://www.motherboards.org/articlesd/how-to-guides/42_1.html I do not see the correct version number on this page either. To get into the BIOS, you would most likely press the del key or f1 key. But do as Mark says if it goes by too fast. You would really need to upgrade your BIOS only if you are having major problems. ------------------

That page doesn't really tell me anything. I have no idea what I'm supposed to download. I got the BIOS version from XP System Information, and that boot screen goes way too fast for me to read it. IP: Logged |

I'm not seeing the actual BIOS version you already have in your post anywhere, it usually apears on the fist boot screen press pause if it goes by too quickly. Here is the "official" BIOS download page for that board, http://www.asrock.com.tw/support/download/dl_k7s41gx.htm#bios IP: Logged |

This is getting OLD. I'm TRYING to investigate how to properly update/repair my BIOS, which is ASRock K7S41GX motherboard with BIOS version/date: American Megatrends INC: P 1.40, 2.5.04 & SMBIOS version: 2.3. Procesor: AMD Athlon XP / Duron 1.6 GHz. I've downloaded the ASR Flash utility and what's SUPPOSED to be the K7S41GX1.70 BIOS- but, since I didn't get it directly from ASRock.com, I'm not sure it is A) what I need or B) uncorrupted. ASRock.com does not seem to support this product, which is only about six months old. I am NOT going to proceed until I am absolutely certain of the procedure. IP: Logged |
