Hi all.

As you know I've been having major problems with the Windows Update function on my PC. But also the last three mornings when I've started my PC it looked and acted like Windows had been just installed. After trying to fix my Windows Update and various other little problems I decided to take drastic action. I reinstalled Windows, (fresh, not over the top) this morning and it looks like everything is now as it should be. I'd like to thank everyone for all their help in this little mess.

Had other problems the last few days. Did a complete fresh reinstall of Windows. Seems to have done the trick.

What is the whole error messsage, and does the error happen on the Windows Update site, or when you reboot your PC, or somewhere else?

I think you've misunderstood what I've said. I was able to use the Micro$oft XP SP2 CD to update Windows XP. But when I go to the Windows Update site after to get updates released since the CD I get that error message.

Well you could spend a lot of time trying to figure out why it doesn't work, or just chalk it up to experience, upgrade using the CD, and move on.

I have the free XP SP2 CD from Micro$oft. No problems doing the XP SP2 upgrade. But when I try to use the Windows Update I get the error mentioned.

Hi all.

I was able to install Windows XP SP2. I shut my pop-up blocker off and went to the Windows Update site where it lists the available updates. It downloads them okay, but will not install them. And they do not appear in the installation history and no error messges appear. But upon trying the Windows Update a second time I get the 0x800A0046 error code. From the M$ KB for this I've done the Method 1 with no problems. But when I try Method 2 (tried 3 times) I get a wrong parameters error. I've renamed the second wuweb.dll file. But still no luck with the Windows Update.
