Right click and then go to properties, then go to screen saver, then go to power, then you should see an advanced button, if you click, you then should see show power icon in the task tray, and hit apply and ok. Then find the box that says show both batteries. If there is a check mark there remove it if you do not have 2 batteries then restart. This fixed the problem for me as somehow the box became checked and I guess that caused the problem IP: Logged |

1. On the taskbar, tap the Start button, and then tap Control Panel. 2. Tap Performance and Maintenance, and then tap Power Options. 3. Tap the Power Meter tab. 4. Total battery power remaining is shown under Power status. Note: On the Advanced tab you can select the Always show icon on the taskbar check box if you want to see a power status icon in the notification area at all times. Use a right-click equivalent on the power status icon to open the Power Meter. You can set Power Options to warn you when the level of battery power falls below the levels you have defined as low and critical. You can change the battery level at which the alarm or message is activated. To set a warning alarm that is activated when your battery is low 1. I have a Sony Vaio with battery meter that is often missing from the Taskbar. If I go into Display Properties > Power Option Properties > Advanced Tab the "Always show icon on the taskbar" option is checked. Even so the power icon often does not show in the Taskbar. Sometimes, but not always, unchecking this option, hitting Apply and then recheckin and hitting Apply will bring the icon back. Sometimes, but not always. I'd love a fix that always works. I suspect a Windows patch is necessary. IP: Logged |

Thank you, Josh1, your steps worked perfectly for me! Some time after installing SP2, I noticed my battery icon was missing. It wasn't an issue until I wanted it to show, and then of course, nothing I did caused it to appear! I thought I'd have to search for something complex in google for an answer, but ended up only putting 2 words in the search (taskbar & battery). This site came up #1. This might be coincidental, but I'm also using a Sony VAIO laptop , VGN-A series. Anyway, thanks again for the help. I never thought I'd get this solved after a single search. IP: Logged |

I'm having the same issue. I enabled Auto-login in TweakUI, and the next time I logged in the battery icon wasn't in my taskbar. I've tried the data execution prevention method, as well as the "check the 'always show icon' button" option (not a n00b).
Any suggestions for how to resolve this other than the 2 methods i mentioned above? IP: Logged |

Sorry - ignore that. Upon restarting it appeared but since it has only appeared randomly. I'll let you know if I find anything else. ------------------ Trig IP: Logged |

Hi All, I have exactly this same problem, but thanks to the info a couple of you have posted, I seem to have resolved this now. As mentioned in the below, you need to add the relevant .exe to the executable protection. As also mentioned further down powercfg.exe seems to be relevant. I've tested this and this is the one you want. So, go to Control Panel>>System>>Advanced>>Performance settings. Select the "data execution prevention" tab and select the second option "turn on dep for all programs and services except those I select". Then click on add and browse to and select the powercfg.exe file (found in Windows\System32). Add this, save it down, restart and hey presto!! For anyone who doesn't know, and the more anal about security, I guess this could potentially make you vulnerable to a virus, if one exists or is created to target the power options of your computer. Personally though, I tend to take the approach of "**** happens"! Why am I doing this on bank holiday morning? No idea, but I hope this helps as this has frustrated the hell out of me. Any questions and I'll do my best to help, but I'm not really that great on Windows, just happy to play about a bit. ------------------ Trig IP: Logged |

I came across this thread searching for resolution to the same problem. It took me a few minutes to figure this out, but as a software developer perhaps I had more background to apply to the task. The issue is that in XP SP2, you now have the option to enable "Execution Protection". This is managed from the "System" control panel app, under the performance settings. I've found that if this turned ON for all programs, the XP battery meter does not load -- at least on my new Laptop. With a little effort I'm sure we can determine which EXE must be added to the exclude list so that you can use the execution protection feature and just exclude that program -- but for me, turning it off is acceptable so I'm done now. :-) Have fun all, and I hope this helps you too. Drop me an email and let me know. I'm curious. IP: Logged |

I do see a lot of articles with that same problem. I don’t know of another solution for that problem. I am glad to hear that the problem was fixed, though. ------------------

Tried the taskbar notification area options (show/hide etc) without success, as well as the below command prompt idea. For general taskbar /taskbar icon problems in Windows you could give this toolbar tweaking tool a try:
I solved my problem using the following suggestion: '"Icons are missing or disappear, reappear: This happens for most Auto-Logon users. Methods/workarounds: Log off and Log back on, password protect your account or disable SSDP and uPNP Services. " from http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/top10faqs.htm (notification area query) Suits me because I use this laptop a lot round and about anyway, so just as well to have it password protected. But I wonder if anyone can suggest an alternative solution? cheers! IP: Logged |

Ok - have now done this (as below) using the command line prompt. No effect whatsoever! Still no battery icon! IP: Logged |

Another board I belong to suggested the following: "use the option "/globalpowerflag" of Powercfg.exe coming in SP2? batteryicon:Use this parameter to turn on or turn off the battery meter icon in the notification area. When this flag is cleared, the battery meter icon does not appear." any views on this approach - and also any suggestions on how I can do this - am totally ignorant about command lines, where to access them and how to execute these commands! cheers! Try this, anywhere on the desktop, right click and then go to properties, then go to screensaver, then go to power, then you should see an advanced button, if you click, you then should see show power icon in the task tray, and hit apply and ok. If you do not see, this then let us know. ------------------

Hi! I recently installed XP SP2 on my Sony Vaio VGN-A115S laptop and since this, I no longer have the battery icon / recharge icon in the taskbar. I have tried changing the display options ( ie active/inactive etc) without any success. I understand that XP does cause problems with taskbar icons; but had no problems before XP2 installed! Any ideas/advice gratefully received! This is a significant annoyance on a laptop that is often used away from a power outlet! cheers! IP: Logged |
