I know that nothing will be deleted, although you may have to setup some of the network settings. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Will I loose all my network settings if I install over it without the format? IP: Logged |

That's how pirates make their money, download software from a warez website, find a product number burn it to a cd, and sell it to people. If you want you could report this person to Microsoft, or to EBay or paypal saying this person is selling illegal copies of Windows XP Pro. Microsoft really does not like people who do that. I don't know if Microsoft has changed this but if a business is selling fake copies or not following Microsoft procedures and you report that to Microsoft, and they find out that this is true they will put the business out of business, try and put the people who have done that in jail and give the person who reported the illegal practices $1,000. That happened where I live a business was burning copies of Windows 98 and selling them instead of the real cd and Microsoft found out and shut them down. My advice is never buy an Operating System from EBay or an auction site, cause they can say one thing but its not it when you get it. Okay well, all you need to do, is when the cd comes in, make sure in the BIOS that the boot order is set to boot to your cd first boot off the xp cd-rom,. and then setup will take you through the rest. Just go ahead and install it over the other one, you do not have to format if you don't want to. ------------------ IP: Logged |

NO, NO, and NO Its an illegal copy. Seller has agreed to refund my money through the Paypal complaint process. I confirmed with Microsoft and if it doesn't come with a book, Coa, and hologram on CD its a fake. At least I'll get my money back. Now what do I do with the install. It's fully upgraded. The Microsoft rep said I could buy another legal copy and install it and not loose my settings. How do I do that? I'm ordering a new copy today from Tiger Direct. They are legit. IP: Logged |

Did it come with the little sticker that goes on the PC? Did it come with a COA (Certificate of Authenticity)? I'll follow Josh's question here, what color is the CD label and what's written on it? IP: Logged |

With that said then you can never be to sure, because this person could have burnt that copy of XP and sold it to you, or this person could have download XP Pro from a Warez site and downloaded it to a cd got the product ID number and sold it to you. Does the cd have any writing on it? Let me know what it says on the front if it has nothing on the front then that is a dead give away. Does it have Microsoft genuine product on the cd? What color is the label of topside of the cd? This person did not give you the instruction booklet that came with XP, they just gave you the number? Just give us all the info that is on the cd, all the labeling so we can see if you have a good copy of XP. Also look at this http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/ww/faq.mspx And you can go as far to call Microsoft and ask them over the phone. If you want I can give you the 1-800 number. If your not in the USA I can find a number in your area that you can call. ------------------ [This message has been edited by Josh1 (edited December 22, 2003).] [This message has been edited by Josh1 (edited December 22, 2003).] IP: Logged |

Even though I'm ebarassed to say I'll come clean. I bought it on EBAY. However, the person had excellent feedback on over 300 transactions. It came in a paper folder with the key on it. Its not holographic. Its an older version, 2001 without the sp1 update. He has offered to refund my money after I send the CD back to him after I emailed him and told him I thought the software was pirated. Interesting? However, I was able to load SP1 update to it. Would that be possible to a pirated copy? How do I find out for sure? If its valid it would save me a lot of time since its already on my computer and running. IP: Logged |

Glad you got rid of the worm, your welcome. What does your cd look like? Where did you buy your XP Pro at? ------------------ IP: Logged |

I got rid of the worm. Thanks. Regarding the xp software I bought: I went to the windows website and it doesn't tell me whether mine in legit. I bought a full version of the OEM software. Many reputable dealers offer OEM software. I was able to upgrade from the microsoft website. Does that mean that it is a legit copy or any other ideas on how to find out. I don't want an illegal copy on my computer. IP: Logged |

Run that scan and find out what variant you have of Blaster and we will help you get rid of it. I would not send out any emails as you may send out the Blaster. ------------------ IP: Logged |

That's what I had (MS Blaster) and the steps I outlined were what I used to get my PC back to normal. They were taken from another help site I frequent. ------------------ IP: Logged |

This is how to tell if you a legal copy of a Microsoft product. http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/ww/default.aspx Oh just another thought you most likely want to run a virus scan here www.housecall.antivirus.com/ ------------------ [This message has been edited by Josh1 (edited December 21, 2003).] [This message has been edited by Josh1 (edited December 21, 2003).] IP: Logged |

Sounds like a problem I had a while back. First, make sure you're NOT connected to the 'net. (If you have a network connection, pull the cable. Otherwise, Safe Mode will make sure you're not accessing the 'net). Go to "start", and "run". Type in "services.msc" (no quotes, of course...). In that list, find the first entry of "RPC" (remote procedure call), and right click...go to "properties". Then go to the recovery tab there, and change the "action" to "none" on the first 3 entries there. You only have to do this on one entry of the list, and it changes all of them in the list. This will stop the reboot sequence so you can get the Windows updates (and make sure you have all of them, and stay current, as more versions of Blaster are coming out all the time!), and get your antivirus current.... ------------------ IP: Logged |

I installed a brand new copy of 2001 windows xp pro on a newly formated hard drive and I am having the following two problems: 1. Every so often, about once an hour, I get a screen saying windows will shutdown and restart because: "Remote Procedure Call, RPC, service terminated unexpectantly." And, 2. After I downloaded the upgrades from the microsoft website they did not take effect. For example Internet Explorer did not upgrade toSP1 even thought it said the download was successfull. I did not expect such a problem with a brand new copy of windows xp pro. Could it be a fake copy. It doesn't have the holographs like the 2002 copy. How do I find out if its a fake? Thanks, IP: Logged |
