Are you sure you do not have any viruses? Have you tried to reinstall your Anti Virus software?

I waited to start my comp and get the error again..

"NT On-Access Scanner service. has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for any inconvenience"

I'm not even sure if it applies since I have XP?

I like Norton, but the only thing is that Norton will use many system resources. Is that the exact error message you get?

I think I'm posting this same issue on 2 threads here at footslog... on the other one it was recommended for me to update my virus-scan and adaware, etc.
After doing it, the problems are basically all fixed
I still get an error message that my McAfee 'NT-on access scanner' must close, and McAfee gave me a fix for it, but they have also given me incorrect instructions twice, so i'm satisfied to keep my computer running as is, and leave that.

Avtually, would you have any recommendation on McAfee's services or Norton's, or any others?
I'm getting a Dell XP home, 3.2gig system, and I'll be connected to the net with a linksys cable modem and router (not wireless).
I've been using ZoneAlarm pro, also... but I'm simply looking for whatever is most compatible and reliable.

I do not see anything that does not need to be there. What other problems are you having?

I found I had some updates available for AdAware, so I ran my system for a while after running AdAware with the updated version, to see how it would run.

Things are working better now, but there are still problems.

Frequently my computer will start running very slowly, and when I check, explorer.exe is using huge amounts of the CPU, often 92+%.
This seems to happen very often after using WinMX, and also after I have opened and closed other applications also. The only fix is often to restart my system.. though sometimes closing everything will help it get back to the normal resource use.

My taskbar is set to auto-hide and even though that setting remains, at times it will just stick as showing.

Whatever is causing explorer.exe to eat my resources seems like a good place to start?

When you try and run spybot is there an error message? Do you have Adaware? Have you done a virus scan lately with the latest virus definitions? For the system restore lets hold up on that for a while just to make sure nothing bad is on your PC.

My XP system used to work relatively glitch free, but it's been having several regular glitches lately...

When I download jpeg pics via yahoo messenger, my computer has started to save them as an unreadable file. I can open them with a bwoser or a pic viewer, and they save fine when I "save as" from the browser

When I open a folder containing mp3 files, my computer sometimes will close that folder window, and clear the desktop of images and then replace them all except for the mp3 folder window

It says that various programs must be closed at times

it now won't open spybot

and the speed gets very slow at times, even tho I do disc cleanup often, and have my start-up menu cleared of anything I don't need

Would system restore help fix these, since they are problems that started and weren't always there?

thanks
jj
