The best way to do this is make sure you have backups of what you want to save. Then you will need to go into your BIOS to change your boot order. If you do not know how to get into the BIOS then when you reboot your pc, look for something that says press Del to enter setup. The Del key may not be it may say press f1, enter, f10 whatever it is press the corresponding key to enter setup utility. Now from here first go to BIOS features setup and look for Boot order or Boot sequence you will need to change the value so that the cd-rom is first. Look at the bottom of the screen to see how to change the values. If the boot order is not in the BIOS features setup, then press escape and look in the other menus. Once you have that set, you will need to exit and save changes. Now before you get into the BIOS you will need to put the Windows XP Professional cd in the drive, after all that is complete, the system will reboot, and then you will need to boot from the cd-rom. Once the system has booted from the cd-rom, windows XP setup will copy files after at is done, I think that next question you will be asked is if you want to repair of install XP, you want to install XP, then I think the next question will be is accepting the licensing agreement, press F8 to accept that. Then it will ask you where you want to install XP select the drive you want to install XP on. You will also need to have XP setup format the drive for you. Format the drive NTFS, the system will then format if XP. After that is done, and if XP has to make any changes to the disc then the system will reboot and then you must boot to the cd-rom again, make sure you follow the same steps as before with the exception of formatting, do not format again. Now when XP reboots the system make sure to go back into the BIOS and change the boot order so that your hard drive or A:\ drive is first(the way it was before we changed it) now after that is done, boot normal and Windows XP setup will start the installation will take anywhere from 30-40 minutes. After that is done you should be up and running if not then let us know.

Prior to the "attempted" upgrade I was running 98SE. The upgrade manuel did not say anything about formating the hard drive so I didn't do that. I simply insertde the CD and clicked on install. There are no error messages, the programs just dont run or start. If formating the hard drive is the solution how is that done?

Prior to the upgrade what Operating System were you using? How did you upgrade, did you erase everything on the Hard drive or just put the XP cd-rom and upgrade that way? If you did not format your hard drive Microsoft recommends that you do a clean install of Windows XP meaning wipe everything out and then upgrade that way. When you try to access the help and support and your other applications what does the error message say, when you try to access Windows Update what is the error message? If you did not format I would suggest doing that as you find that fewer problems will occur.
