OK, might as well close the topic now. The Product Key that came with the CD worked in the upgrade, and (for future reference), it asked for the P.K. almost right at the beginning (2nd or 3rd dialog). Thanks for the help though and I'm so happy I have XP Pro now! ![]() ------------------ IP: Logged |

But 98SE will still be just the same, right? And do I still have to activate Win XP when upgrading? ------------------ [This message has been edited by radoon (edited October 13, 2003).] IP: Logged |

Oh okay, well if you abort at that point you will not be able to use Windows XP. ------------------ IP: Logged |

I think that you must provide the product key after Windows setup copies the files, however not all of the files (somewhere in the middle of setup). With that said, when you abort installation, have you tried to put the Windows 98 cd-rom in the tray, booted off that cd, and then tried to start windows 98 setup? Most likely you will have gotten an error message, if not then continue with setup. The best solution without having to format would be to go into dos and then type deltree command this command will delete everything in a directory along with the subdirectories. We want to delete the Windows directory and all of the subdirectories so we can continue with setup, and have no problems. In order to do this we need to go into a command prompt boot of the windows 98 cd-rom then when the menu comes up look at the bottom for command prompt (I think you press Shift+F5) then at the C:\ type C:\deltree /Y C:\windows Now when you do this the directory and all of windows subdirectories will be deleted. Then you can proceed with windows 98 setup. ------------------ IP: Logged |

I want to know if I can abort the upgrade from the point where it asks for a Product Key. If you want to know why, it's because the CD I have did not setup up XP successfully on a clean system with the provided code, but I've used the CD before to upgrade another computer that was running Win 98SE (same as my computer), Please advise soon. ------------------ IP: Logged |
