Have you tried to do this, reboot your computer making sure the scanner is unplugged and then when windows fully reboots and you are in the desktop, plug in the scanner and see what happens. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Hi Josh I went to the page as you suggested, found a corresponding file for WindowsXP on another page = Q810400_WXP_SP2_x86_PTB.exe, installed it but it didn't work. Let's see if we are luckier next time. Thanks Ro IP: Logged |

What Mark, and I think is that XP for some strange reason is that XP sees the camera as another scanner. When you plug the camera in, XP initializes the device, tries to load it in the memory, but the system rejects it because it sees another scanner. See what I am saying? You are welcome for the help, and we will continue to look in to this for you. ------------------ IP: Logged |

When the computer is started with the camera connected it is detected correctly but there is no use in connecting the scanner to another USB port, it will not be detected even if I disconnect the camera then (without restart). It seems that Windows XP can detect only one device each time, to detect the other one must connect it to USB and restart. Actually this is not a big problem since the camera need to be connected only for a few minutes to download pictures each time and one can restart before and after it, when the scanner can be connected again. Of course it would be better if both could work at the same time, as I tested they can both in WindowsME and Windows98, using the same camera and scanner. Anyway you helped me a lot and I’m most grateful. In case you find out something else about this problem, please tell me. Thanks again Ro IP: Logged |

Try what Mark said, "Hook up the camera first and then after it is running and recognized by the system plug the scanner in." See if that works ------------------ IP: Logged |

Yes, there you should be able to connect both scanner and camera on different USB ports. When you disconnect the camera from the USB then it will disappear, but the problem you are having is that when you try and connect both the scanner and the camera in the USB ports it will not see them and give you an error. Look at this http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;310575 ------------------ IP: Logged |

I went to the suggested link, disconnected my scanner – it was connected to another of the 4 USB ports of my mainboard (Asus333) and - Eureka, it worked ! After I restarted the computer I was able to download images with Windows Assistant (but not with Zoom BrowserEX a program installed that comes together on the camera CD, althought it appeared in the list of the Assistant). The assistant identified the camera correctly as Canon PowerShot A300. While the camera was still connected it appeared as “ Digital Still Camera” both in Hardware device manager and Control Panel > Scanners and Cameras. Also Control Panel > ad new hardware displayed “Digital still Camera” and informed on the next screen “device working correctly”. As soon as I disconnect the Camera from the USB it vanishes completely from all these places. You have helped me already a lot but isn’t there a way, like in other Windows versions to connect both scanner and camera on different USB ports ? Thanks Ro IP: Logged |

What happens when you try and install the software off the cd? Okay I have found a question like yours here, http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324756 Let me see what I can come up with ------------------ IP: Logged |

I did as you suggested and no camera showed in Hardware/device manager nor Control Panel.I connected the camera (USB), started Windows XP again put the camera "on" as suggested in the user guide and no new hardware was detected. I went to control panel >new hardware and at the top of the list was Canon Camera with a yellow "!" not working sign. When I clicked for properties the same code 38 message, I described before displayed. Ro IP: Logged |

Okay press the Windows Key (the key on your keyboard with the flag on it) and then pause break key at the same time. This should bring up the device manager then from there go to hardware-device manager- and look under image drivers. IS your other camera listed there? If so then delete it, try this also. Go to control panel-printers and other hardware-scanners and cameras, or as soon as you get into control panel go if you see the icon scanners and cameras go there, is your old camera still listed there? If so then delete it right click it then pick delete, or just make sure its highlighted and hit the delete key. ------------------ IP: Logged |

I have a Canon PowerShotA300 camera and I can't detect it on Windows XP, althought there are no problems in installing it with Windows ME and Windows 98 with the provided CD that should work also with XP. Windows XP should detect the camera even without any install but doesn't, and downloading the driver again from Canon doesn't work either. The message "Windows could not load the driver of this device because a former instance of the driver is still in memory (code 38)" displays but starting the recently installed Windows XP anew (no former camera was ever installed on it)has no effect. Please help, there isn't a single support link on Canon's sites. Thanks Ro IP: Logged |
