Sorry for all the preliminary questions, I asked I wanted to make sure that we did not skip a step or go over one that you already have done. First lets get your hard drive in. This should help you better then I can because they have pictures, and this better illustrates how to do it. Lets position your jumpers first. Have a look here http://www.harddriveupgrade.com/jumper_pins.shtml. Now in the reading it says set to "slave" Now you can set the jumper to slave if you want. Keep this in mind, if you have a cd-rom then most likely it is already on the primary IDE controller set as slave, and to make things easier on you, you will want to set the incoming hard drive to master position on the secondary IDE controller. If you notice the long gray cable coming from your present hard drive and follow it to the motherboard, it should be plugged into a black controller. And next to it there should be another controller just like it that should be empty. That is what you need to plug your IDE controller in for the incoming hard drive. Now getting back to jumpers, you most likely don't need to set any IF you will be adding this hard drive to the secondary IDE controller and IF it is empty. If the secondary controller has a device plugged in to it, then you will need to change it to the slave position. Now after we have that done, we need to mount the drive inside the computer. Have a look at these http://www.harddriveupgrade.com/add_new_hard_drive.shtml http://www.harddriveupgrade.com/add_new_hard_drive_2.shtml If you have a drive cage then look at this http://www.harddriveupgrade.com/add_new_hard_drive_3.shtml If you do not then slide the hard drive in the 3.5 bay, even with the screw holes then screw the screws into place with a Phillips screw driver. Once that is done look here and this is what is should look like http://www.harddriveupgrade.com/add_new_hard_drive_4.shtml Now boot your computer, and go into the BIOS. http://www.harddriveupgrade.com/add_new_hard_drive_5.shtml These screen shots here may look different then yours. Make sure that your new drive is showing up. If not then try auto detect, to see if the BIOS can find it this way. If not then shut down and make sure everything is right, triple check everything. If all is fine, then great, exit and save changes in the BIOS. Now boot into Windows XP as you normally would. Once in XP, go to the control panel-then performance and maintenance-then administrative tools-then computer management-then disk management- then you should see your hard drive your cd-rom and the new hard drive listed at the very top. Then click on your new drive right click and then a sub menu should pop up, look for partition. The wizard will do the rest, and then you need to format that drive. If you get confused this will help you as it has pictures. http://www.seagate.com/support/kb/disc/howto/install_xp_disk_mgmt.html ------------------ IP: Logged |

Most retail drives come with software that allows you to copy your entire drive to a new one. You can just re-install XP if you would like. IP: Logged |
