and one other thing she did ,had zip and dvd both set to master on primary ide

ok ,got it figured out finally,
the lady whos puter this is was actually inside the puter and had the cables and all ,all screwed up the harddrive was on the secondary ide channel, and a dvd and zip disk were on the primary ,the bios musta assigned the harddrive a c: for win98 ,but winxp wasnt fooled lol

Try this, put the XP cd-rom in the drive, boot off of that, format the drive when the setup prompts you if you want to format, and select yes, and try to continue with setup.

had win 98 se setup perfect ,then when i tried to upgrade to xppro again ,gave me the same message

You should not use fdisk to set-up XP.

Is the drive set as master? or cable select?

Are you booting of the XP CD-ROM? Is that the exact error message you get?

had badly corrupted win xp home on puter ,puter was formatted with ntf ,and when i refomatted it i formatted it to fat32 ,now when i try to install xppro ,tells me
unknown disk
(there is no disk in this drive.)
7664 mb disk 0 at id 0 on bus 0 on atapi [mbr]

c: partition1 [fat32] 7663 mb (7648 mb free)

any ideas
