No, you need to be logged in under Admin to install software or the user must have those privileges. Go to control panel- then administration tools, or if the control panel is in category view, go to performance and maintenance, then Administration tools. Then go to local security policy, from there you can change settings. You are very welcome for the help, glad everything works. If you need an explanation of the different services, then let me know and I will try and find one for you. Have a look at this, if you need any more help then let us know. http://www.windowsecurity.com/tutorials/Windows_XP_Professional_Edition_Local_Security_Policies.html ------------------ [This message has been edited by Josh1 (edited June 20, 2003).] IP: Logged |

Thank you all!!! I converted my system last weekend and it went smoothly. Can you tell me, are Users able to install software? I want to prevent my son from installing software without supervision. Thanks! IP: Logged |

Do you have the full version CD-ROM of windows XP? If so then, we will need to go into the BIOS, and change the boot sequence and set the CD-ROM as first. To do this, when you first boot your PC, look for something that says, Press Del to enter setup, the key you press may vary. Hit the corresponding key to get into the BIOS, now go to BIOS features setup, look for Boot order or boot sequence, change it to where it says CD-ROM first, exit and save setup. Now make sure your XP CD-ROM is in the drive. Now the system will boot off your CD-ROM, XP setup will begin, it will ask you where you want to install XP and if you want to format the partition, and if you want NTFS or FAT. Then after that setup will begin to do the normal procedure. When you reboot, you will need to go back in the BIOS and make sure you change the boot order back to the hard drive or however it was set before you made the change to boot off the CD-ROM. Lastly, you will then need to activate Windows XP. So the setup wizard will ask you if you want to format, and if you want to format FAT or NTFS. ------------------ IP: Logged |

I would like to reformat the drive but I wasn't sure just inserting the full version XP Professional disc would prompt me to reformat. I want to take it all the way down and bring it up clean. I have rarely heard of any good coming from an upgrade installation. So all I need to do is put the disc into the drive as is and it will take me through the reformat/partition/loading of the new operating system? IP: Logged |

Your welcome, Wedor is right, a format would be the best thing to do in this case. However, you will not be able to reformat, if you do not have the full version of Windows XP. If you reformat the drive then you will not be able to install Windows XP Upgrade version, you will need to either install Windows 98, or Windows Me first, then upgrade to Windows XP. If you have the full version of XP, then we can simply boot off the Windows XP CD-ROM, during the initial boot up, and format and install XP immediately. I take it; you do not want to format your hard drive? I can understand if you do not, but the best way to do this with Me is format. Let us know what you want to do. ------------------ IP: Logged |

I think you will find that Microsoft recommends AGAINST upgrading ME to XP, a clean install is best in this case. IP: Logged |

Thanks Josh. My son installed NT-4 over Windows 98 without reformatting the disc and the computer had to be slicked and start over. I am worried about the same thing happening by booting off the disc without reformatting. Is that one of the options when the disc is loaded? IP: Logged |

Well all you have to do is put the XP cd-rom in the drive, and then setup will start. After that is done we can then convert the FS to NTFS from a command prompt. So just go ahead and stick the XP Pro cd-rom in the disk drive and then the setup will continue. Then after that is done we can go to a command prompt, then convert to NTFS. ------------------ IP: Logged |
