Alkaseltz9, yes the post was a little dated but still open, because I have not closed it yet. I don’t recall HH offering any workarounds, Wedor and I did though.

HUH??

I didn't offer any work arounds. I pointed out that this was a quirk of XP.

Sorry I thought since this was still open and it was a little old, someone had finally found an answer. This is a XP quirk and the work arounds that Hugger offered didn't work for me at all. Sorry for the bother.

Alkaseltz9, could you start a new topic? The only thing I can think of is add a toolbar, but you want an icon not a toolbar. I am thinking a quick launch icon, or you can drag an icon down to the toolbar and it should be added for you

My reply from earlier probably answers your problem. I've copied it below.

"I posed this question in another BB I frequent. Apparently the taskbar icon thing is a quirk of Windows XP. I've given up, as have others, on trying to "fix" it."

I am having the same problem as Hugger. Did anyone find a solution to this problem? If I go to Task Manager and "stop the process" and then restart. The icon shows up. But when I do a hard shut down and start up again they are gone again. I agree with Hugger this is really annoying. I installed URU and a a Geforce FX 5500 PCI card when this started, if that's any help.

I also tried going to the task bar and click on and off Hide icons and customize. All of the icons say Hide when inactive, I changed them all to "stay on always", They all reappear when I do a "restart" but disappear when I do a shut down. Please help!!

There has to be a fix to this, but I have yet to find one. When I do or anyone else then we will tell you.

So, I guess there's no way to get them to appear as I want them to?

Mine do that also, in the custom notifications I still have some that appear even though I do not want them too.

Maybe so, but here at home in the system tray all the icons for programs running appear, whether they are marked "always show" or "hide when inactive." On my g/f's PC the icons seem to decide what wants to appear and what doesn't.

The right lower corner is the system tray.

I've right clicked on the taskbar, then went to properties-customize-past items. I've set the ones I want to show up as "Always show", but they don't. If I re-check them later they show up as "always show" but they don't.

Where your custom notifications are correct? Have you right clicked on the taskbar then went to properties-customize-past items then do your items show up there?

The items I want to add would be on the right side of the taskbar at the bottom of the screen. There are some programs that are running that are not showing up in the taskbar. They appeared in the taskbar previously.

It sounds as if you want to add items to the system tray. Items in the system tray use system resources, extra items in the system tray are not desired by most people. That's why people use quicklaunch instead, items there don't use resources when not in use.

I really don't know what you want. I know you don't want the quicklaunch, we have already got the things we want to run at startup going. You cannot manually add anything to the custom notifications. Unless there is a registry add in for that. So maybe you will find that a toolbar will help you, and that is explained here http://searchwin2000.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid1_gci509978,00.html
Do you think this will help you?

I won't be able to look at this problem again until at least late Friday afternoon. It's on my g/f's PC and she's a one hour drive away. How does adding a tollbar help this?

They are running. How do I get their icons to appear on the taskbar? I've gone the right click on an empty space on the taskbar, hit properties and unchecked the "hide inactive icons" route, but they won't appear.

Then that would mean they are already running. Go to msconfig-startup and see what is running.

The programs load okay, but the icons won't appear in the task bar. When I try what you suggested Josh1 I get a message saying there is a previous instance of the program running. I know it's not a big thing, but I like to know what programs are running.

Okay on the right side of the taskbar. We can put these icons in the startup folder. So they will start with windows. Just open up my computer-C:-Windows-Startup then drag the icon(s) you want to have with startup. Now it will most likely make a copy of that icon, instead of copying the orginal.

Hi all.

I'm having problems with the icons in the taskbar. I have programs that startup on PC boot-up, but their icons are not showing up on the taskbar. I've done the "right click on the taskbar, go to properties and set what I want" routine. But that doesn't seem to help. Is there a program / process I can run that will allow me to put the icons on the taskbar I want?
