I cannot find the exact match, but I know this site has the fix. http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm this should point you in the right direction. If not then let us know.

There is a listing of "past items." I'd like to get rid of most of them, as they're programs, etc. I no longer use. I found a registry editor that apparently would do that, but they're all still there. Any idea on how to get rid of them?

There should a listing for past items in that same box you are talking about. It should be below current items.

I was able to find the place where I can modify what appears on the task bar. Right click on your taskbar, and go to "properties". On the bottom of the "taskbar" tabbed page (should come up first by default), click "customize" near where it says "hide inactive icons". But now I'd like to get rid of the "Previous Used" icons. I found a utility that was supposed to modify the registry and they should have disappeared, but they're still there.

Laptops use an item like that to allow to safely remove cards from the slots and USB connections, that's the only type program I know of that would use that type of icon.

I am not to sure, is it the Quick lanuch icon by the start meun? Go check your recycle bin and if it is in there then hit restore.

I don't know what I was thinking the other night. I deleted an icon from the taskbar and now I'd like it back. It's the "Add / Remove Hardware Safely" icon. I'm running Windows XP Pro on a P-III with 500 MHz and 512 Mb of RAM.
