OK I've tried this but I still can't access the cd-rom drive. There is no icon for that drive when I open the My Computer icon on the desktop. Is there something else I can do? Thank you for your help.

No, go ahead and restart your computer, now before the Windows 98 splash screen press the F8 key, so about two seconds after the computer fully restarts, press the F8 key until you get to a menu, from that menu, go to command prompt only, now after you hi that you will be a t the command line which looks like this C:\ now once you are at that screen type win /d:m then press enter, now you should be able to access your drive in safe mode. If not then let us know.

Ok I've read the article, but I'm lost. Do I need a Windows 98 startup disc to do this?

That is normal for the CD-ROM not to show up in safe mode. In safe mode, Windows just loads the basic drivers and devices it need to run windows. And because a CD drive is not needed to run windows, thus it does not load in safe mode. Have a look at this article to get your drive to run in safe mode. Let us know if this helps http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=194846,

When I start the computer in Normal Mode, if I click on the My Computer icon, the screen freezes or goes black and the computer shuts down and restarts. In Safe Mode, when I click on the My Computer Icon on the desktop, the only drive it shows available is the A-drive or floppy disk drive. I have a cd drive and a zip file drive, but none of them appear when I open the My Computer icon in Safe Mode. Is there a way of opening them in Safe Drive because although I know all the drives appear in the My Computer icon in Normal Mode, I just can't open it to get at them. So the only drive I can open in Safe Mode is the floppy disk drive. I hope this makes sense to you, because it doesn't make sense to me at all. If I burn the cd-rom, I have no way of clicking the cd drive open, so how could I get it to download the information into the computer? Thank you for any help you can give me in resolving this problem.

The CD-ROM not work in safe mode so have a look at this http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=194846, can you burn these programs to a CD and use that CD to have the scanners on? Or does the CD drive just not work?

Hi and thanks for you prompt answer. Unfortunately, I can't access the internet on the affected computer to download the spyware/adware you suggested, and the only drive which seems to work on the computer is the floppy disk drive and that only works in the Safe Mode and the downloads you suggested (Spybot and Adware) are too large to fit on a floppy disk. Do you have any other suggestions? Thank you for helping me in my desperate situation.

Go here http://www.footslog.com/board/Archives/Archive-000003/HTML/20050327-16-000026.html download Adaware, and Spybot, deleting anything that may be found. You may have to run the system in safe mode to delete the items. How to boot into safe mode http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/usingwindows/maintaining/tips/advanced/SafemodeBoot.asp Then go here and run the online virus scans, then download Hijack this, (first link) and run a scan and then post a log. How to post a log into your reply http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/#copyandpaste do not delete anything just run the scan and then post the log. If you have any problems then please ask us.

I have a Compaq Presario 7000 and use Windows 98. Today my computer began acting funny. I have a Panda Security System and when it is running, two icons of a panda appear on my tool bar. Today when I started using the computer both icons were there, then one disappeared. I double clicked the remaining one to see if I could get it back, but nothing regarding Panda Security information would open. I uninstalled the program and then reinstalled it, although both icons returned, I could not get either to "open" when I double clicked. Normally, they open with information about the program and the security status of the computer. I had been using the internet earlier in the day without any problem, but when I tried to connect to the internet, I received the "cannot display this page" message. I checked the connections and the other computers in the house attached to the same modem. All the other computers can access the internet, but not the Presario. When I restarted the Presario hoping "to clear" the problem, after all the programs loaded, a gray lexplore box came up with the message "This program has performed an illegal operation and will shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor." When I shut the box, the screen went to blue with the Windows message of something like "there is a fatal error located at. . . " appeared. Unfortunately, I did not jot down the location of the problem and the box has not returned. What happens now is everytime I start the computer and it finishes loading the programs, and I try to use any program or to go on the internet or just open a file on the desktop, the lexpore box come up with the "illegal operation" message and then the screen freezes up so I can not do anything. I would appreciate any recommendations you might have to remedy the situation. I'm not very computer literate, so please use as simple language as possible. Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.
