It could also have been a problem with the corrupted registry, or it could have been a problem with the updates or both. What you could try to do, is install the updates one by one if you wish. Then if you have problems with an update just uninstall that update you installed.

All I remember was it was a large file that came sometime after the first of the year. I did not notice the problems for a few days and then I kept finding more and more but I still didn't relate them to the update. After trying everthing else I found your site and that led me to mention the update. I don't believe I updated anything but the Critical Updates.

Glad to hear that did the trick, and you are welcome for the help. You have restored the registry back to January, so you will need to go to windows update and then download the updates. But before you do, do you remember what update caused the problem, was there one in particular?

Thanks a million Josh. You have correct my problem. Restored back to January 2006. Everything is now back to normal. One big question - what should I now do when windows tells me thay have CRITICAL UPDATES?
As soon as I got this problem corrected up pops the Microsoft Updates telling me I need to download critical updates. Should I update or ignore????? That is where my problem started 2-3 months ago.

Sorry, I should have paid more attention, so go ahead and reboot your computer, then about 3 seconds after the system reboots and before the Windows 98 splash screen press the F8 key then go to command line only. Now at the C:\ type scanreg /fix press enter, this will attempt to fix the registry. Now try the control panel, if thhat does not work go back to the command line, and then type scanreg /restore pick a date before the problem and make sure it says completed next to the date. Restore the registry and see if that help if not then let us know.

Do you have the Windows 98 CD- disc? Try this go to start-run then type in sfc and then let Windows find any files that need to be repaired and then repair them. Let us know if you need any help.
