Yes, I can understand that you want to borrow the cd, so you don’t have to pay for it, it makes perfect sense. But by doing that even though you may not see it or may not even hear about it, it hurts System Builders, Independent Software Builders, Microsoft partners, Small Business and even Microsoft. With Windows 3.1 up onto XP it was so easy to pass the cd to everyone you know and have them install that copy onto any machine. Now activating your copy or anything like that. Microsoft saw that problem, and now requires every copy of an OS and Office products to be activated. Even though with that measure people still do make pirated copies. I hope you understand that we do want to help you, but we want to help you go through the right channels and protocols. No need to be sorry, I just think many people don’t really know because they never think of that, just like you said just like music you download a free song but you never think abut all that other stuff. Well it could be that the cd you have was not an original might have something to do with it. With Windows 98 you can boot off the cd itself (no typing any commands) and do the format and setup automatically. I could not say that the computer, something is wrong in that area, simply because I don’t have enough information as to make an intelligent decision. Now your computer is not crashing or just acting strange, it is just Windows is not installed. But what I can tell you is that from the setup phase, it could be the cd is not original, or you are typing the command wrong, or in the wrong directory or wrong parameter. You have a HP (which is a System Builder and partner), so your OS was preinstalled and you had some restore disks for your machine. If you buy a legal copy of Windows 98 we can walk you on how to get into the BIOS, boot off the cd first and then Windows setup will format (if needed) and install Windows. One drawback is 98 is old and support for 98, and Me will end June 30th. Support from Microsoft, not us, I was going to suggest XP but a machine from 1999 I don’t know if that machine will be able to run XP not well, or not at all, and an upgrade is not worth it on that system. Another thing is that I don’t want this to turn into a formatting problem, now you going to spend money on a new PC, unless that is what you want to do. I am certainly not going to push that, so we can still get 98 working. Have I ever seen that? No, but I can make some assumptions as to why it does not work as I have stated before the parameter could be wrong, that “setup” it shows could not be the right one, or there is something wrong with the setup file on that disk. A smarter decision would be to buy a new PC and you don’t have to buy an expensive PC, Dell, Gateway have deals just make sure you tell them what you want. I am looking at some PC desktops for $339-1,100 so there or some choices out there for you.

So I need to purchase an installation CD with a liscence somewhere.

Sorry...I didn't even think about the legallity of that (kind of like downloading music sort of thing) Well what if I go out and spend money on a new OS and I still can't get it to perform the setup...then what? The computer could be shot or something and then I would have spent money on an installation CD that is no good to me. In your opinion....do you think it's the CD or the computer. The computer an old HP PAvillion from like '99.

I'm trying to set up a stinking network at my parents new home with old family computers. and with the move it's impossible to find the original CD.

In your opinion....do you think it's the CD or the computer. Have you seen something like this before where it couldn't run the setup even though it shows it in the directory? Just wondering what would be smarter to purchase.

Well is this an original copy? Whoever owns that CD, is the only one who has the right or is licensed to use it. So if you are not the owner, seeing that you are not then you cannot use it. So we will be unable to help you any further with this question.

Did you borrow the disk from the school? A CD-ROM cannot be formatted, so that is not the problem. Yes you can see the directory of any drive by going to that drive and typing dir

#1- Sorry....I guess we had a little miscommunication......Yes setup is there and I typed it in both caps and not.....but I get "bad command or file name". It doesn't start the setup. It doesn't do anything (The CD is from a TECH School)

#2 Just bear with me for a sec......Let's say the CD drive was mistakenly formatted (It definitely worked before formatting) Is it possible to still see the directory? Or can the CD drive be formatted even?

Thanks!
Wood

Okay if this is the Windows 98 CD you can boot right off the disc. If not then try this when you get to the command line change to the E:\ drive then type in CD\win98 then press enter you should see E:\WIN98_ then type in setup, then setup will start.

Sorry, something else.....
I checked the dir in the E drive and it says

WIN98
WIN98_SE
.........

I also went to the A: and then tried SYS C: then it said "system tranferred" rebooted and no change. ( I tried making a boot disk on a floppy but I think it failed....that's what's in the floppy drive......And the 98 installation CD from the TECH School is in the CD Rom.

Thanks again!

Typed SYS D: "Cannot Specify Default Drive"

SYS E: "Cannot SYS Network Drive".........

Does this mean anything to you?

Thanks,
Corey

Okay, if you have a Windows 98 Cd you can boot off that disc and have setup automatically format and then run setup for you. Okay so lets go ahead and do the format command, (format will erase all info on the drive) so when you get to the command prompt type format C: then press enter, and then answer “Y” to the next question then the process will start. Let us know if you need any more help.

Yes you do need a Windows 98 CD to install 98. Because 98 is outdated, it will be sort of hard to find 98. You could try a computer shop and see if they can order it for you. I would not try Ebay because you never know what they will really sell you, and if the CD and or licensee is legal. Is there any computer shops around where you are?

Yes you can, you need a cd burner and cd burning software such as Nero and a CD-R or CD-RW disc.
