I think art files are AOL format? Anyway, you can download Xnview to view those files http://www.xnview.com/ Have you ever been able to view art files before? About your modem, did you install the drivers, for your Ethernet? Sure we can walk you through the process just make sure you installed the drivers.

Hi again Still haven't been able to connect to the cable internet. Checked information in Connection Wizard. I do not seem to be able to delete or change any of the information I have entered. Do you think I should do another full restore and start the process over? Could I go through the Connection Wizard information with you step by step? Maybe I have entered the wrong information in the wrong place and I don't even realize it. What should I do?

Another question I have which is unrelated to the connection thing is that I do not seem to be able to open files with the "art" designation; I can open jpeg files fine but not the "art" files. Is there something I can do to get them to open?

Thanks again for your support and help.

In order to get newsgroups you have to be connected to the Internet, as these newsgroups download their information from the Internet. What is the name of the newsgroups that you wish to subscribe to? You can get on the Internet without setting up any newsgroups, think of a newsgroups as a mailbox, such as this website. With Newsgroups, you can browse other topics, reply to them also but you must be subscribed to that particular newsgroup. Tools-Accounts are within Outlook Express, Outlook Express in your email post office, again you need to setup the Internet to view your emails in Outlook and setting up to get on the Internet via Outlook is not the normal way and I don’t think it can be done. When you did go through the Internet Connection Wizard there is an option to setup a newsgroup you can and should skip that step for now, as this can be done later. So redo the wizard skipping the newsgroup and email account setup.

Hi again. I still haven't been able to connect to the internet. I thought this might be because I did not fully complete all the parts of the Internet Connection Wizard. I got as far as the box that asks for the name of the account for the News (NNTP) server and whether the server requires that I must log on to the news NNTP server.

The adelphia people I contacted suggeted that I should follow a number of steps to set up the Internet Connection Wizard and add a newsgroup account in Outlook Express and subscribe to newsgroups.

Unfortunately, I could only get as far as the second step:

step 1 Open Outlook Express (I did this)

step 2 Click on Tools from the menu bar
(I could not find "Tools" or the "menu bar")

What do they mean by this? The only "tools" I could find were in a folder marked Tools 95 and clicking on that folder did not give the selection of "Accounts" which is the suggestion of step #3 "Select Accounts. This will open the Internet Accounts window."

So, now I'm stuck once again. I guess my question now is twofold: First, is the reason I still cannot connect to the internet because I didn't complete the information about a newsgroup account in the Internet Connection Wizard? And, second, if I need to complete this section of the Internet Wizard in order to connect to the internet, how do I find the "tools" and "Account" selections that are step #2 and step#3 that the adelphia people said I would have to do in order to sign up a newsgroup account?

I hope this all makes sense. Do you need any further information to determined where I went wrong? If so, please let me know. What should I do next to attach the computer to the internet?

Thanks for your help and patient with me.

If you did the networking wizard, installed the drivers, then you may need to email the ISP back tell them you installed the drivers and see what they tell you to do. Because we have done all the steps to get you back online. Maybe Mark has some other ideas, on the modem itself do you see any lights flashing on and off?

If you switch the cable from the router to the PC you will need to restart the modem for it to recognize the PC correctly and assign it an IP.

Alright lets try and download the drive for your Ethernet. Go here http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?dlc=en&lc=en&product=93118&cc=us&dest_page=product&os=20 and then go to Diamond Home Phoneline, download that and install it, and then see if your modem is detected. Remember to plug the modem straight in the PC not via the router.

Aright lets try this plug the modem straight into the back of the PC and see if you can get on the Internet. If you cannot or can then let us know, and you are welcome for the help, and do you know the make and model of your PC?

Hi again. The connection of our main computer to the modem is Ethernet, but the computer I did the restore on and want to get back on the internet is attached to a router which is attached to our main computer's modem. Do you understand what I mean by that? Now what should I do?

Thanks again for your help and patience with me.

Yes, how does your cable modem plug into the back of the PC, USB or Ethernet?
Look at the picture and then tell us what port it uses.

USB: http://www.mazzetti.de/editor/shots/usbport.html
Ethernet: http://www.udayton.edu/~question/1999/tower/tower_rear_ethernet_port.jpg
Let us know and we can go from there, and you are welcome for the help

Hi again. I contacted the adelphia help people about getting my IP address. First they told me to check the More Information on the Ethernet card and to send them all that information. I did and the response I got back from them was "it seems you will have to install either Ethernet or USB drives depending on the connection type between the modem and the PC." That is all they said.

You you understand any of that? I don't. What should I do next? Do you need the information I emailed them that was on the More Information for the Ethernet card?

Thanks for being so patient with me.

Hi Okay I did not find the radio button in internet options.

The automatically detect is checked in the tcp/ip properties.

No, I did not get a number to enter. Do I contact the same website I got the incoming mail server name and the SMTP server from? I didn't ask for the IP number. Is that what I am supposed to ask for? Once I get the number, what am I supposed to do with it?

Thanks

Alright, lets try this, if you go back to Internet Options-Connections-Add, when you click add do you see a radio button that says connect through my broadband connection? I don’t think that this button exists in 98 but try anyway, if that button is not there cancel out that window. Now lets try this, go to Control Panel-Networks-TCP/IP then click on properties and look for the IP checkbox is the box that says automatically detect checked? Did you contact your IP if so did they give you a certain number to enter in? And did you complete the networking wizard? Your welcome for the help

Hi again. I did what you suggested and this is what happened: When I clicked on the automatic configeration button, a box appeared which said, "You can automatically configure Internet Explorer using information at:" under this message were the letters URL: followed by a blank box. Under the blank box it said, "To update settings immediately click the refresh button; otherwise changes will take effect only when you restart the browser." I clicked refresh and restarted the browser but when I clicked on the Internet Explorer icon on the desktop I got the same white-X-in-red-circle warning that I wrote you about in my last response.
Now what should I do? Thanks for your help as always.

Hi again. Okay, I got the incoming and outgoing server information and entered it in the appropriate boxes. When I clicked finish, however, a box with a white X in a red circle popped up with the message "Internet explorer cannot open the Internet Site http://desktop.presario.net/scripts/redirectors/presario/deskredir.dll?c=2c98&s=consumer&1=enu.
A connection with the server could not be established."

When I clicked the ok button on the box, the message "Navigation cancelled" popped up in the Internet explorer box.

Now what should I do to get connected to the cable internet?

Thanks for your help and patience with me.

Hi again Thanks for the rapid reply. I clicked on the second choice conntect using my localarea network (LAN) and it opens to a box called Proxy Server. It asks "Does you local area network (LAN) use a proxy server to connect to the internet?" I'm no sure how I should answer this. How would I know this?

You do not have a proxy server.

it also says "Note: for information about how your LAN is connected to the Internet, talk to your network administrator."

Who is the network administrator and how do I get in touch with him?

That would be you in this case.

Another box asks me to choose "my incoming mail server is a (POP3 or IMAP) server. Type the name of your incoming mail server" and "A SMTP server is the server that is uded for your outgoing e-mail. Type the name of your SMTP server."

First of all, how would I know whetehr I should choose POP3 or IMAP?

It is highly unlikely that you would be using IMAP, choose POP3.

Next, how would I find out the name of my incoming mail server and the name of my SMTP server?

You would need to either go to the website of your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or call and ask them. Alternately if you have a computer with a working internet/e-mail set-up you could copy the information from that one.

Hi again I tried the internet conncection wizard but it doesn't work for me. The two options it gives me both involve a dial-up connection. One option says "I want to sign up and configure my computer for a new Internet account. (If you select this option make sure your telephone line is connected to you modem)." The sceond option says "I have an existing account through my phone line or local area network (LAN). Help me set up my computer to connect this internet account."

The reason these option do not work for me is that I am no longer connected to a dial-up account. I have an internet cable account. So my problem is, how can I get reconnected to the internet cable? Josh said it was possible to do this without starting up a new dial-up account, and he was walking me through the process.

Do you have any ideas about how I should proceed? Thanks for your time and effort.

Glad to hear that you got the restore to work, now onto the modem. Do you remember when I told you to go and check for the IP address before you did the restore? You will need to make sure that the box for automatically detect IP is checked. That is in Start-Control Panel-Networks-TCP/IP then click on properties and look for the IP checkbox. Do you know what the name of your cable modem is?? And if I can remember you do not have the cd or installation disk for your cable modem?

okay the full restore worked, but I haven't been able to get the computer back on the cable internet. When I click the Explorer icon on the desktop, a compax box comes up and askes if I want to connect the dial-up modem or use a local access LAN. Neither of these selections seem to work at connecting the computer to the internet because when I click the E on the desktop again it just starts the whole process all over again--Compax box which connection do you want?--

So, now I guess I need help as to what I should do. I hope you can "walk me through" step by step a process to help me get the computer back on the cable internet. Hope you are well and that this isn't going to be too difficult for you.

Thank you puterfix

Hi again Sorry I haven't gotten back to you in a while. I've been too busy to try to do the full restore on my computer until now. I saved the files I wanted to keep and put the resore disc in. It downloaded the program and the main page gave me three options: Full Restore, Typical Restore, and Custom Restore. The information on the Maine Page said click the prefered restore to start the program but when I clicked on the start button, nothing happend. I tried double clicking on each one of the types of restore, and nothing happened. I'm stymied. What should I do now that I can't start the restore process? Is there another way of starting the restore program? Please help ! ! ! As always, thanks for all the help you have been giving me.

Your welcome, yeap that is the box that was what I talking about, do you mean what kind of drivers you will need to install? You said you had a restore disk that came with your computer? Then that disk should contain the drivers for your computer, however if you bought any new hardware for your computer, then those drivers you will need. And I don’t know what programs you have on your computer, I cannot tell you what you need as far as programs. If you tell me, then I can help you. You are welcome for the help.

Thanks for the explanation and the advice. I feel a little more confident now about doing the restore. Yes, the circle for an automatic IP address is checked. No, I do not know what drives or programs I will need to install and would appreciate it if you could send me a list of them. How do I check for the numbers for them?

Thanks for standing by me through all this.

Yes, that disk should work, if it does not then you could contact your ISP to have them send them you another disk. Okay to contact your ISP, go here http://www.adelphia.com/contact_us/ From there select Internet Connection Support-Connectivity, then in the comments section, tell them that you just formatted your hard drive due to some viruses, and if an IP is required fro my cable modem then can you tell me the IP address? If your cd still does not work, then you can ask them to give you another cd. Now when you went to networks I control panel, and you looked at the IP tab, did you remember the check box that says btain an IP automatically? What this will do is try to obtain the correct IP so that you can get on the Internet. Its okay, we understand, you could not get on the Internet when you did this before so what’s to say it will happen like that again? Well as we said we will help you get back online no matter what. Do you know what programs you need to download, and reinstall, I would make a list, and if you have any key codes for any programs perhaps that are saved on your computer, I would write them down on paper.

Okay. So you think once I do the restore, I will be able to format the modem using the disc I told you about?

There are a couple thing you said I don't quite understand. (1) What do you mean when you say I could "email my ISP and ask them for the settings"? How do I do that? I mean, where would I send the email? and (2) I did not understand what you mean by "and for IP you could to to set that to automatically find the IP."

Sorry I'm so dumb about all this stuff, but I want to be as sure as possible that I'm doing the right things before I do the restore.

As you can tell, I'm afraid once I do the restore, I won't be able to get back on the cable internet. But, I know if that happens, you will help me get back on, won't you?

Again, thanks for all your help.

Those are all the settings, and they are all correct. You should be able to format and reinstall the cable modem. The cd that came with your modem could either be the drivers for the modem or the settings for the modem, or both. If for some reason you are unable top get the settings to work, you could email your ISP and ask them for the settings. Most of those settings you would not fool with, and for IP you could to to set that to automatically find the IP. I know that you are worried about your modem not working, but it should work once you format.
