I have been having the same problem. I even backed up my important files and did a system restore, but it happened again after a day, so I restored AGAIN.
*sigh* And after 2 or so more days, it is happening again.
This is what's going on (and by the way, I am running Windows XP Media Center Edition, NOT 98):
Suddenly, I start losing executable files (EXE files), and Microsoft Paint, Caculator, the Sound Device program that runs in the task manager bar, are usually the first ones to go. I now don't have Windows Media Player, Internet Explorer, and I'm sure other programs I haven't realized are gone yet.

WHAT'S GOING ON?!?!? Help me!

Place the shortcut in C:\Windows\Program Files\Start Menu

That is the location of all start menu items in Win98

Well what you could do, is go to the program files folder. Go to My computer, then go to the folder Program files, then look for Word, in one of them folders, then look for the executable file for word. It should have the Word icon, then drag the icon to your desktop, that will make the shortcut.

The programs are supposed to be in the Windows/Start Menu folder.

You could try to create a new user in control panel with the "Users" utility, it should create a user with all of the parts intact unless someone has set some security policy on your system.

Okay, go here, housecall.antivirus.com/ and run the scan for the homeuser and see if it finds anything.

That was my first assumption you were logged in as another user, however I did not say that because I was not 100% sure of that. So let’s see if you are, go to Start-Log Off then hit yes to log off then the system will log you off. The login window will come up and you need to enter your password and username. The spyware scan, many people may have the same spyware on there PC, because spyware affects everyone, I just thought that maybe the spyware if you had any was hiding your desktop icons and programs.

hide icons is unchecked.
it kind of acts like the user has been changed. is there a way to check for other users or to see what users are listed to use this computer?
a screensaver was downloaded a week or so before this. i deleted it a bout 6 days prior to this. the computer had been rebooted dailey since installation and removal.
i can find the files in c drive. i can get a shortcut on the desktop. how can i get them in the start/ programs box? yes when you go to start-programs, nothing is there.
thanks, royce

Lets see if this will work, go to Start-Settings-Control Panel-Display-Effects-Make sure the hide icons is not checked, if so uncheck it and then hit apply and ok. When you say program files, do you mean by going to Start-Programs nothing is there? Did you recently download anything, that you know of?

i tried as told . the last backup date was the day after the problem started. i also downloaded and ran the lavasoft program. no results.
all the files are in c drive as they should be. there is no short cut on the desk top or nothing in the program box. i can create a shortcut on the desktop, but it just opens the folder and starts the program.

If that does not work then you may have some sort of spyware on your system. Go here http://www.lavasoft.de/downloads.html and download ad-aware 5.83 download, install and then run it. Make sure for the options select deep registry scan and to scan your hard drive.

Okay lets try this, go to start-shut down-restart in MS-DOS mode. Once there type scanreg/restore then a menu will come up, you will need to select a backup cop of the registry. Then once that is done, boot up normal and see if everything is normal. If that does not work, do the same thing by going to MS-DOS mode, then select a later date backup of the registry. If you have tried all the backups, to no avail, please let us know.

Well, what exactly is going on? There are no icons on your desktop? Also when you go to my computer then double click on the hard drive icon, no folders are there? When did this start to happen? Have you recently installed anything?

So there are no icons on your desktop? Everything is hidden? I would go here www.housecall.antivirus.com/ and run the scan for the home user and see if it comes up with anything. If it does then let us know.

update: it seems the files are still in the computer but, there are no icons on the desk top and there is nothing in the start, program box. i have tried to drop and drag, with a little success. the things that are really hard are programs such as word, wordperfect, excel, and other programs for hard ware and such. we raelly dont know why this happened. the backup that was done was 4 months ago, and i dont know if it will over write anything that was put in after the backup.
