Description:

I can't go into windows because the computer automatically shut down.  I try to reinstall windows but the setup program hangs.  What can I do except formatting HD?

The Answer

You can start Windows 98 in safe mode until you find out what is causing the problem.  We've seen this happen when a new video card is installed.  Although, there could be a number of things causing it.  To start it in safe mode:  Boot the PC and almost immediately (before is says: Starting Windows 98)  start pressing the F8 key.  This will provide you with a menu on which one of the options is to Start in Safe Mode.  This will start Windows 98 with minimal drivers loaded.  After you get back into Windows you can start troubleshooting or undo what ever caused this problem.
