Category: Software
RAM: 32
Processor: Pentium
MHz: 233
Operating System: Windows 98
The problem:

explorer on my system keeps giving error message and locks system up before it completely finishes loading windows. (error message "this program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down") what can be done about this. ** Appended Sat, November 6 at 22:23:21 **

Solution:
It could be hardware that is causing this or corrupted files. You should be able to get into Windows 98 under safe mode. Hold down the F8 key when your computer is booting and select the start in safe mode option. Double-check your display adapter. It could be causing this if you have the wrong display adapter set up under Windows 98 than what the video card inside your PC is. Reinstall AOL. We have seen AOL cause Windows problems like this. Run the System file checker. This will check all of the Windows 98 system files for corruption. If it detects a corrupted file it will prompt you to replace it from the Windows system CD. This can be located under Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Information. In the System Information program, select the Tools menu and System File Checker. You should be able to perform all of these tasks starting in Safe Mode.
